Yup Celeron 1.7 is a Willamette, very crappy CPU. Even though that x1600 could handle the game the CPU is a huge bottleneck.

That CPU won't overclock very far, and even if it would it would still perform like shit.

Well, I would at least go for a p4 northwood if it holds it. It would make a world of difference over that celeron.

You can probably pick those up cheap off of ebay.

ok here are all the specs of the cpu listing in the motherboard manual
*Socket 478 for Intel Micro FC-PGA2 P4 prossesor
*Support Intel P4(northwood, 0.13um)prossesor
*intel P4 400mhz FSB
*2nd Cache depends on cpu.

im going to buy this one but am confused about the 400mhz and the 800mhz settings any clarifacion doest it matter seeing how the new one is 800mhz and can i use my old heatsink with this new one http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-PENTIUM-4-P4...QQcmdZViewItem

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Intel-Pentium-...QQcmdZViewItem

That will though for sure!

p.s they only post to uk, so if you dont live in uk I wouldn't bother!

I would be careful, the fsb is twice what your mobo is made for, thus meaning it just might not work! If your mobo came with a 1.6Ghz celeron in it then its old!

Just be careful thats all im saying!

Good move, yes this will give you a good boost in power!

It has a bigger L2 cache than your Celeron and its a P4 and it runs faster and you will beable to clock it also!

There is really not much point in buying a 478 CPU right now.

If u want to play the more taxing game in the world, maybe u should buy a new PC.

That sounds like an insult ... To people who still have 478.

478 doesn't suck that much man. If you have a Pentium 4 Northwood at least, it won't bottleneck.

Dude... Liek SERIOUSLY... an Omlette sucks I usually try to put the good points in play but this time... I am against omlette (williamette), get Prescott P4 or Northwood (I recommend the northwood, 3.2Ghz version with HT though, Prescott gets too hot)

EDIT: Dude if you know nothing about PCs and used a program to get the specs (which is like 9999 lines long), don't think about changing 478 socket processors, they are amongst the hardest to install.

Go to a PC shop and buy a PC, don't buy from big brands like dell, hp and so on, they rip you off heaps!

Northwoods kick ass... if you can get one you can do some good overclocking... 2.6 -3.4ghz on air easily, if using a 3rd party heatsink, up to 3.6ghz on air. My first build was a northwood... my first time overclocking was with that proccy... ahh the good ol days.

I have a prescott 2.8 with 533 FSB and 1M l2 cache.. nothing wrong with s478 man its just older technology... single core works fine for gamers that only do 1 thing at a time, dual/quad core is for people that do multiple things at a time...

Hell, my 2.8 prescott will surf the internet, run a Norton Antivirus scan, and play Medal of Honor maxed out perfectly and that's on 512MB DDR333 with a geforce 5200.

It won't reach that. He said he never did it with his CPU, he just claimed "other people" have done it. Anyone who has reached 5Ghz with a northwood is very lucky and was using some type of extreme cooling.

What makes you think that? They aren't any harder to install than any other type of processor. For that matter processors in general aren't hard to install. Just be careful when removing the heatsink and read up on applying thermal paste.

*BUMP, this is an urgent post just in case the guy who needs help makes a mistake*

I think it would be unwise to stay on socket 478 with such an old motherboard. The 2.4 Northwood seriously doesn't make the cut; it doesn't support HT. The Northwood is seriously overpriced (the one in EBAY).

Reasons to upgrade to Socket 775:
-Since you have a large amount of RAM it is recommended that you upgrade the motherboard and processor.
-Consider this, if you stay with the same motheboard and get that Northwood, you won't find a huge performance increase in oblivion; the X1600 is still bottlenecking.
-Who knows? The Northwood may be DOA.
-The 400mhz specification is obselete, no point upgrading. The price of the processor isnt even cheap. I mean $79 bucks??? What the hell? I could buy a new Pentium 4 Prescott at that price!

Recommended upgrade:

This motherboard at least is easy to find. LGA775 processors are very easy to install compared to 478.

-Asus P5P800-VM Motherboard:
Support for Celeron D to Pentium D 65nm. AGP 8x, DDR400 Dual channel, has SATA and two IDE ports, I think this would be the best upgrade option.

-Socket LGA775 Pentium 4 531 Prescott 3.0Ghz;
Relatively cheap, these two items (motherboard + processor) prices combined will never reach 200 bucks. Do not purchase celerons, they are discontinued, the ones you purchase now are just left over stock processors. They really suck as well. Don't listen to people who go IVE CLOCKED TO 5.0GHZ!!!! Thats pure stupidity; you would need to nitrogen cool/phase cool the whole system. Every component would need it. Especially with Northwoods; hello? SNDS???

These two parts are necessary to make oblivion playable.

Northwoods dont suck, but the thing is if you have an older 478 dont think about northwood. At that point, it would be wise to upgrade.
