E8400 with DS3 Advice!
Got a few questions on my E8400 overclock, and I’m hoping that the collective intellect of TPU will provide the answers.
Dropped E8400 into Gigabyte P965 DS3 rev 3.3 last night , bios F14. OCed with a couple of tweaks to 4GHz, which is what I was hopping for. (444x9) Orthos gives 57 under load with my old E6400 cooler. Now Questions: 1 – Multiplyer has a +0.5 setting, am I right in thinking that at multi 9 this will have no affect as the proc will only go to 9? 2 – Ram Crucial800MHz/PC2-6400 Ballistix Memory CL4 2.0V (2x2GB). I can run this at 888 with timings 4,4,4,12 with +0.4 V. I think I have read that the DS3 gives 1.8V to the ram default, is this true? If so am I overvolting by 0.2 V and is this safe? 3 – Ram will run at 5,5,5,12 with +0.2V in real terms would these timing make any difference, and would the ram be better run with this lower overvolt? 4 – Running Proc with 1.3V reading around seems to indicate that this is well within safe limits, any opinions? All advice and opinions welcomed, pretty noobish.

I ran my E8400 at 4.0Ghz with 1.45v for two years and it was fine. Cracking processor, still today.

1. yes
2. yes, just make sure it doesnt overheat (can cause crashes after many hours, its not always obvious) 3. no real performance difference, lower volts means less heat tho. 4. should be fine. also, update your specs on the forum.

Hey OP make sure you have the latest BIOS for that thing.
1.45v is pretty high both in general for just 4Ghz. Mine did it with 1.32 and that was just average. Seen more than a few at 4Ghz well under 1.3 You absolutely sure it needs that much?
