Can someone talk me outta this?
Coming from crossfired 4850's... t'will be a sad day...kinda.
![]() I'm getting sick of looking at benchmark after benchmark then over thinking it, just to have to start over again. ![]() Unless I'm reading every benchmark I've seen today, these still perform better (or at least on par with) their 6xxx level counterparts. Specs are listed, I don't think my e8400 @ 4.0Ghz is going to bottleneck this card much, if at all. I'm not overly concerned about bottlenecking anyway...Bulldozer is in my sights. Thanks for your insight. |

You shouldn't bottleneck at 4GHz, so you'll be fine.
You'll definitely be able to see an improvement with the 5870 though, from what I've read. Question is.. Are you struggling with your current performance and really need to upgrade? ^,^ |

The HD5870 is an awesome card, still my fav to date, I would highly recommend it or either the HD6950 if you can find one cheap, if not just go with the HD5870

The performance jump will definitely be worth it and you won't have to deal with crossfire and I also doubt there will be any bottlenecks.

Go for a 6950 ... it will be greater performance for about the same price.... plus it will be newest gen and have better tessellation skills for the newest games out there. Just my opinion since DX11 and Tessellation won't be going away anytime soon.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-523-_-Product http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-389-_-Product Or if the price is a big thing for yah the same thing can be said for the 6870... about the same performance as a 5870 but you also get better tessellation as well as being up to date with current cards.... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-506-_-Product http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-418-_-Product Just some suggestions... my thing is why go for last gen when you can be current for the same price and beat the performance??? Just a thought

The 6xxx series have a big advantage in DX11 and will be well worth the extra $50 in the long run.

At 1920x1200 with 4xaa on Unigine Heaven benchmark the 5870 is only about 15 frames be hide the 6950. The 5870 trades blow with the 6950 and the 6870 on non dx 11 games. If you have the extra $50 then go with the 6950 but if you’re strapped for cash or on a tight budget then get the 5870.

I would happily buy another 5870 today and simply await the release of the 7xxx series and the corresponding Nvidia products, indeed, given that most games are still console ports, the 5870 may even see you through until the release of the 8xxx series. |

Wait one more generation I say unless you have an immediate need for dx11. If you can't wait, the 5870 will be great but I doubt you're going to see anything that will blow your mind.

Thanks guys...after careful consideration, and a small amount of animal sacrifice and "eeny-meeny-miny-moe"ing...I went with this:
ASUS EAH6870 DC/2DI2S/1GD5 Radeon HD 6870 1GB 256-... I guess I'm just a slave to the "BUT 6 IS HIGHER THAN 5!!!1" mentality. ![]() Again, thank to all!

just something i didnt see mentioned:
when i went from a 4870 crossfire setup to a single 5870, i saw massive FPS boosts on a 4.2GHz wolfdale. We reasoned it out at the time that crossfire adds to the CPU load, causing the bottlenecks sooner. In this case, even if a 6870 is 'equal' to 4870 crossfire, the reduction of CPU overheads should give you some nice performance boosts, especially minimum FPS in CPU limited games.

Sorry for the delay there...email notification wasn't working...
I didn't go with the 6950 mainly for price. I set a limit of $200, and even went $4.99 over that with shipping. Granted, $25 isn't much when all is said and done, but I had to set a limit somewhere. |

Both my 4850s are in TOP condition still. If ppl are having problems with 3+ year old cards I would suspect its due to either stock cooling w/ crappy TIM or user neglect. I have Zalman VF1000s on both cards and re apply TIM every 6-8 months. Cards are both OC'ed too and 1 has been from the day i built my rig (Aug 08)

Purchased the first one in June of 2008 for $199, and then picked up the second on ebay in April 2009 for $73. They (one, or both, I'm not really sure...haven't had time to troubleshoot since it's started) have started acting a little wonky. Strange artifacting type stuff, but I seriously could not have asked for better performing cards.
