I'm no expert, but I don't believe that Windows is able to use two sound cards for output at once. You would have to swap between them when you switch between gaming and such.

I'm assuming you're using onboard sound for the monitor speakers, and you're using your graphics card's built-in decoder and HDMI output for your xonax system. The problem is that you'll want to configure your onboard card (connected to monitor) as your default directsound device, and you'll want to configure your games to use the GTX580 HDMI out. The problem is most games don't allow you to pick an adapter that isn't the default directsound device.

Therefore the only rational solution is to switch the default directsound device to the GTX580 HDMI out whenever you launch a game, and then change it back to onboard whenever you quit the game.

Actually it is. I do it all the time with my MAME arcade machine (which doubles as a jukebox for my living room entertainment system). The problem is that you need to use two programs at once (each configured to use a different adapter), which requires you to trick the programs into using different adapters or manually change it in the program settings.

bah, you should buy one of those cheap mini jack splitter and plug it on your soundcard's speakers output. You will be able to have sound on 2 sets of speakers just as you want.

Those things usually makes the sound really bad

Can i create a shortcut to change quickly then?

per application is easy - just click the speaker and go into the mixer, change each thing individually.

however per speaker is more difficult. very few games or programs allow you to choose where their sound gets outputted. they also do not allow sound to keep playing as you switch the default device.

splitter cables don't really do what you want - because then ALL sounds are playing on ALL speakers.

I do not know of a software solution that forces certain applications to use certain devices, and saves profiles so it works automatically. that VAC from what i can tell looks ... like something :)
