WoW isn't free so not sure why anyone would say that. It all really depends what your definition of free is, Lord of the Rings Online and Dungeons and Dragons Online are both F2P, but both really require you to pay to get anywhere decent.

Thats true for almost any mmo, it's like saying Crysis 2 is free if you keep playing the demo over and over.

There are no free MMOs. sooner or later you will be forced to buy something in order to progress.

Guild Wars needs to be bought, but there is no subscription after that.
There's a total of 3 campaigns and one expansion. I recently bought it all in a Complete Collection for ~15 € on Amazon

And, there is a cash shop in GW, but it is nothing important, costumes, extra stash... nothing that gives any advantages to those who buy stuff.

As for classical F2P MMOs, I'd recommend checking out Dekaron (also used to be known as 2Moons)
It's not the best game there is, but it's not bad and it's action packed...

Also, as mentioned before, if you're into quest-grind games, LOTRO is good.

Knight Online was pretty good when i first tried it quite some time ago. Though it was filled with turkish players. If you don't mind that and if you get a companion to play with the game is pretty fun. I loved forking the monsters and then selling the items at the market place.

Depends on how you play. My sister loves Lord of the Rings Online because she only play games a few hours per week, so it's perfect for her. It'll take her ages to reach a place where she has to pay.

If you're more serious, it's hard. A relative played Runes of Magic for awhile and said it was pretty decent.

I've been playing Guild Wars recently. It's a lot of fun. I plan on buying all the additional campaigns soon.

Raijian, you should check out Amazon or some other online retailer. I bought GW Complete for ~15 €, and from official NCSoft store, it would cost me 40 € (25 € for trilogy 15 € for EotN)
And, if you like GW, you really should get all the campaigns! Lots of fun (Personally, I especially liked Nightfall campaign)

Eve can be free to play, with a buddy invite you get 21 days, and you can pay for the account with in-game money... however, it'd usually take 1-2mo to be able to start earning enough to pay for the subscription.
