Upgraded from 5970 to 6990, performance lost

UPDATE PROBLEM SOLVED

it seems the last guy gave me the solution. i tried the card in different slot. it seems the first slot of my EVGA has a problem and until ig et my second 6990 i will have to keep it.

when i put my card in my second slot i got 35 FPS at unigine!!! and 7.9 at WEI!

Hi all,

i got a chance to change one of my 5970s for one 6990. i did so and decided to check its performance.

i am stunned. The card is underperforming. at the windoews assement test i am given a poultry 5.5

here is my GPU validation file.

i did a clean format to check the canrd and the same things. do you need me to psot more information? or shalli return the card immediately?

Windows Rating is hardly a benchmark. Play some games and see how it fares and maybe run Unigine to see how it does on that. Don't return a card without actually trying it on games first......

Also, poultry=bird meat. You mean 'paltry'

The GPU-Z validation is for one gpu only? Someone else with a dual card can verify that.

Specify which games you are trying. Ignore WEI

Try other drivers. From our benchmarks here, it's clear that the 6990 should beat the 5970 by good measure. Also make sure you test performance for each card using the same game at the same graphical settings

dont do by the windows assessment mate! It's wrong! After you install all the service pack and updates try running it again for the numbers...

as for performance? I was running a sweet ass 5970 and it's still a fav in my books..
The 6990 drivers are a problem... I knew that at release and opted for twin 6950's that beat out the 5970 and big brother

It still depends on which game. I have one 5970, a meager E8400 @ 4Ghz, only 4GB DDR2 and play using a hi-res monitor @ 2560x1440. That's taxing my system more than zanat0s'
Never have I seen 20 fps...

Perhaps a game like Cryostasis or Metro 2033 might give 20fps..

It's best to compare like with like.

2x 5970s = 4 fucking gpus vs 2 gpus durrr i wonder why my frame rate is lower herp derp. now if thats a continued typo then no problem otherwise your expecting

2 40nm 6970 cored downclocked to beat 4 40nm 5870 cores downclocked, of course performance will be less, stop with stupid fucking benchmarks and RUN A DAMN GAME

Unigine is known to scale with up to 4 gpus, most games will not,

he's saying he got 33 with one 5970. 55 with two 5970's.

but he is getting only 20 with one 6990.

for one 6990, it should be between 33 and 55, say something like 45, so something is definitely wrong!

why u guys ignore WEI? if it is not giving the score it should, then something is not right. maybe not good to compare two different cards, but at least same card should give same score across all PCs. he should be getting 7.9.

WEI can give false readings because of powerplay not being utilised properly. For example I can get 6.8 with my HD 5870 one minute, force 3D Clocks and run it again....bam, 7.8 .

look its pretty simple either A) the drivers borked uninstall reinstall, if that dosent fix it, reformat reinstall windows start from scratch, pretty damn simple

The last person who had issues with a 6990 that was on here it was a borked driver install from his previous GPU's this seems like a cut from the same cloth issue.

If that's thecae, it might affect the gameplay too, isn't it so? Not anything wrong with WEI.

Maybe, maybe not. Powerplay is mysterious in the way it moves sometimes WEI sucks.

I got half way through this and was wondering why the hell he was comparing a single 6990 to a 5970 Xfire setup...

Obviously an issue with Drivers, or a problem with windows. I assume Drivers because it sounds like the OP literally just plucked the old setup\card out and replaced it.

I'm wondering why one would want to downgrade from two 5970's to one 6990, going from 4 x 1600 SP's to 2 x 1600 SP's
