Same goes for me. I hope I'm not breaking the rules by posting here for a 7720, but I need an 8600M GT 512M MXM II NVidia video card for an Acer AS7720G-6604 Notebook computer. My son, who is serving in the US Army, sent it to me to repair but it's dead in the water until I get a replacement video card.

Does anyone know if one with an ASUS bios can be flashed while it's installed in the Acer 7720G?

This whole ordeal has gotten to be very time consuming and also frustrating. Acer's tech support was as useful as an air-conditioner mounted in an Igloo in the middle of winter.

Any help for this old soldier and the young one too would be appreciated.

Does the Asus card actually work in the acer machine?
why don't you take it down to your local store with the correct bios so they can flash it for you in another machine

you can put a ATI card too check it out http://www.mxm-upgrade.com/7720G.html

Check Ebay in your country, or go to your local laptop technician, he can probably get the parts for you
proper link http://www.mxm-upgrade.com/9920G.html
ebay link from UK http://shop.ebay.co.uk/i.html?_nkw=8....c0.m270.l1313

Bo$$, I don't know if you can install an ASUS version bios card in the Acer and then flash it, that's why I asked. I'm not going to waste money to get one if it can't be done.

That link you posted for the ATI card is the same one I found earlier today, but wasn't sure if it would work. I know that Acer made some 7720G's with AMD CPU's and ATI video cards, so I wasn't sure if the ATI card's video bios would be recognized on a system bios for an Itel Opt 2 Duo T8100. Do you know for sure if it will work? If not, I'll contact that vendor in the UK and see what they have to say. I just don't want to get burned buying something that will be DOA on this machine.

System Specs - AS7720G-6604-VUT64/8100/3G/320/CAM/512VGA

Wowie, Wow, Wow, Wow!

Bo$$, I just coverted 200 Euros into US Dollars, which equals $287.08 US. That's what the Belgian dealer wants for that card. Very pricey but I guess they will be a dealer of last resort if I can't locate something else that will work but at a cheaper price.

If you just recently purchased a laptop with 8600M GT i would return it, as i have heard lot of people complain about them after long period of usage their performance will drop by a huge portion. Also the temp will be higher than average.

I've had 4 pairs of them die in my Toshiba X205-SLi4. Finally gave up, bought a new laptop and no more issues.

All 8/9/200 series cards are pretty much defective due to issues with the solder bumps cracking as well as improper underfill.

From what I've read about the MXM II cards, and believe me, I've real plenty in the past week, I have yet to find someone who has baked their card have it last more than a month. There's a guy on Ebay who claims he can repair them and make them better than new by fixing all of the bugs in them, but he won't take them if they have been baked. Anyone here deal with him before? If so, how's his work?

a month or 2 is about right for baking if the damage is severe You can get more if you shim it properly and keep the flexing to a min operation condition's

Hi GoArmy,

Here's a link to a GeForce 8600M GT 125 MB MXMII graphics card with a VGA BIOS for ACER Aspire 7720G laptops : http://cgi.befr.ebay.be/NVIDIA-GeFor...DE_Elektronik_ Computer_Computer _Graphikkar ten&hash=item5d2f0d521d
It's in Germany and the price is affordable, 129,99 € + shipping.
I think that the seller will agree for shipping to the USA if you ask him.
Cheers,

Scorpioleuven, thank you for the find but I've decided to send my card to a technician here in the states who can repair them. There's quite a number of problems with them, including using non leaded solder during the manufacturing process, which is one of the big reasons why they are so prone to heat failure. I believe the repair process includes replacing non leaded solder with leaded solder in the critical areas that need them, in addition to adding a heat shield to the main GPU chip. I can get it repaired for $70 US, and hopefully that will be the end of the problems. I'll be sure to let everyone know the outcome once I get the repaired card back and get my son's computer operational again.

yea lead solder is the way to go much higher stress tolerance. tho I am not crazy about the addition of a IHS(heat shield) might run into clearance\mounting issues
hopefully he will re-ball it with a proper reball kit
some technician 's use a heatgun and fly by the seat of there pants ... leads to trouble down the road

Hi OneMoar/GoArmy,

Yes, it's called "reballing". I also know here in Belgium a technician who repaired so about 10 MXM & MXMII graphics cards for me: afterwards, the laptops worked again fine. It's the same price : 50 Euro per card. I hope it will also work for your son's graphics card

Well everyone, I sent the MXM II Nvidia/Acer 8600M GT to a tech here in the states to be repaired, got it back, installed it back in the Acer 7720G Laptop......and.......well......it's DEAD. Tech refunded my money so I'm still searching for a replacement card for the Acer 7720G, that won't break the bank. Some of these people must be high to think that people will pay $300 to $400 hundred US dollars to buy a video card for a 3.5 year old laptop. Not cost effective. My search continues.
