GTX570 revised design

I just received my new MSI GTX570. It had the same model number as my old GTX570 so I had expected more of the same. Well I got something a little different. I got a slightly smaller card but not the version with the display port connector that has been floating around. It also had a smaller fan and different pcb than either model that I have seen. I figured that since the box was already opened I would test out the card and I was shocked with how loud it was. This is the loudest card that I have owned other than the 4870x2 that I had for a short time.

I wonder if they beefed up the power circuitry on the new version. Can you take pics of the card with the cooler off? Or, if you don't want to take the cooler off, just a pic of the backside of the card?

I won't be popping the cooler off since I'm going to return the card but I'll make sure to get some better pics of the backside of the card before I send it off.

Seems this might be the new reference design, it looks like a GTX470 PCB...

Is this what the back of the PCB looks like?

Here are a couple of better shots of the backside of the pcb. Looks just like the GTX470 if you ask me.

It's an exact match. Even has the same PCB number, NVA-P1025-000(B).

Yep, and it really isn't surprising considering the GF110 is pin compatible with GF100. Since it is the same PCB as the GTX470, it is cheaper to manufacture than the GTX580 PCB that is under used to make a GTX570. It also matches the specs of the original GTX570 PCB, with the same 4 Phase design.

Why do you think that we have seen all of these pictures of the burnt up vrms with GTX570 but that just does not seem to be an issue with GTX470?

Simple, the GTX470 is BIOS limitted to 1.087v, the GTX570 allows up to 1.213v. That is a massive difference, and makes a massive current draw difference. I've seen GTX470s blow just the same when the BIOS limit is bybassed by editting the BIOS. Once you start pumping that much voltage through the core, the current is too high for 4 Phase VRM to handle, and not even the OCP can save the card.

Thanks, thats good to know. I was shocked with how much two GTX570s can draw with just 1.05v. I watched my UPS hit 650w during Crysis. I had to push 1.3v to my 6950s to even start to approach 600w during kombustor.
