NVIDIA Launches GeForce GTX 580M, The Fastest Notebook GPU Ever
NVIDIA today announced the world's fastest notebook graphics processing unit (GPU), the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580M. Available now in the Alienware M18x, the new GPU sets new standards in industry leading benchmarks and games. It will also be available soon in the Alienware M17x notebook along with NVIDIA Optimus technology.
"The best game support. The best gaming features. The best gaming performance available anywhere. That's the essence of the GeForce GTX 580M," said Rene Haas, general manager of notebook products at NVIDIA. "With power like this, you can turn all the knobs to 11." The first notebook PC to feature the GeForce GTX 580M, the Alienware M18x offers the option of two GeForce GTX 580M GPUs in one system for up to double the gaming performance, using NVIDIA SLI technology. Not to be outdone, the Alienware M17x will offer the GeForce GTX 580M along with NVIDIA Optimus technology and will deliver 5 hours of battery life in Facebook, and 100 frames per second performance in Call of Duty: Black Ops. "Gamers aspire to experience games at their highest settings," says Eddy Goyanes, product marketing manager for Alienware. "Alienware activates the technology designed to enable those aspirations. With the launch of the GeForce GTX 580M on the Alienware M17x, and a dual card option on the M18x, that synergy continues -- Alienware delivers the ultimate gaming experience." GeForce GTX 580M GPUs are the fastest Microsoft DirectX 11 notebook GPUs on the market, offering up to six times the tessellation performance of any other notebook GPU. They are also more efficient, with up to 20 percent better performance per watt than the previous generation. NVIDIA also introduced the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570M GPU, which offers 20 percent faster performance than the previous generation product it replaces. The power of GeForce GTX GPUs means gamers can play at full 1080p high-definition resolutions with the advanced technology features that set GeForce GPUs apart from the competition. These include:

I wonder if i can replace the 280m`s in my m17x, no mention of the formfactor.. i will assume MXM and research the upgrade..... Sweet.
any word on chipset compatability with the MCP79? my machine clocks back automaticly from the 280sli to the onboard..is that optimus or an early implamentation that has been orphaned...I am intruiged and I mustache you these questions.. I wonder what the price is of the chipset. At a 50% premium, I'd buy a PCIe card with two of these things SLI'd if that had performance like 560 SLI but with the power draw less than a single 560 whist remaining cool and silent.

I'm going to have to agree that most high end laptops are gaudy. Sager's are Clevo notebooks. They're not top notch quality but they are MUCH better priced than most high end laptops. Last edited by Kenshai; Jun 28, 2011 at 05:48 PM. |

the screen on the clevo is sub-par the warranty and backup (in Australia) is sub=par the build quality (IMHO) is sub-par the m17x replaced my Toshiba x205sli3 the 8600m sli based machine was poorly designed and overheated all the time also after the toshiba i felt that plastic construction on a machine of that size does not offer the strenth or rigidity required for transport of such a machine the styling on my black alienware looks great (I have turned the leds off) bang for buck the clevo is great, just i shyd away from it because of concerns of longevity good call though. |

And I can criticize anything I want because it is my personal opinion and my right as a human being to voice that opinion. If you don't like my opinion, then just move on. Yes, pretty much every laptop available for over about $1100 that is not super thin will get portable gaming done. Hell, several of the soon released AMD APU built laptops for $500 to $850 will get more than decent gaming done. Alienware is not even close to the only solution like you seem to believe. Here is 1 of dozens of options: HP Pavilion dv6-6190us Notebook Intel Core i7 2630... As for alternatives you can go with a SFF computer a 19 or 20" monitor, mouse, keyboard, and a backpack for portable gaming. Something like this should be decent. While not as practical as a laptop, it would offer the usual desktop benefits such as easily replaceable individual parts, upgradeability, better cooling, and more power. Options are nice. So next time you have to audacity to criticize me not liking a product's aesthetics, then you need to keep your fanboy in check, attitude under control, facts straight, or just shut up. Second. your right to free speech and unique views on certain components/hardware were never critisized nor denied in my posts Third.the portables you refer to were not in production at the time i purchased my m17x r1 Fourth. I am no fanboy and chose the alienware on my unique criterium at the time of purchase Fifth. a small form factor machine does not fit the criteria of most people in the market for a desktop replacement notebook myself included Sixth. I was not critisizing you merely asking for clarification i am sorry if this resulted in any adverse feelings Seventh. Do not tell me to STFU. |

Well at the end of the day, how a machine looks is only a small factor compared to reliability and quality construction. You can have the prettiest or ugliest machine in the world but if it paperweights then its not worth it. I know Alienware has gone down a bit in recent years, mostly after Dell bought them up I hear. But that doesn't mean all user experiences are the same.
I still see people swearing by Alienware so it doesn't matter to me. One point I was Macs only then x86 switch hit and they became standard PCs with a high premium to me. At this point I'd probably buy Toshiba but that would change too in time if they really blundered. Fanboism doesn't survive forever. Eventually the target of the fanboy blunders some way and hearts broken must move on or see the light. |

GTX580M = GTX485M ( both are made of GF114, same amount of SP, same memory bus etc .. only change between both gpu is the core frequency: 620mhz vs 575mhz before (memory speed identical at 1500mhz ) ( 8% gain on core speed ) .
for the GTX570M: it's a bit different, as it use now the GF114 (with some SP locked as the 560 (non TI ) desktop ) and the 470M was using the GF104 ... Well despite this, the GTX485M was allready an excellent mobile gpu.. so with 45mhz more it will not become bad called GTX580M ..... Just the words from Nvidia for their marketing are really funny. Anyway for peoples was ask how it perform: basically GTX570M = downclocked 560 (non TI ) and the 580M or 485M = 560TI downclocked . Last edited by lane; Jun 28, 2011 at 11:09 PM. |

Identical to the GTX485m yes. The GTX480m was a downclocked GTX465 (352 shaders).
The GTX580m (485m) is merely a downclocked GTX560TI (offering roughly GTX460 1GB - GTX560 performance) whilst the GTX570m is in effect a downclocked GTX460 768mb with 1.5GB of Vram. Performance of both parts should be very good (especially so for mobile parts) although the HD6970 is a worthy contender (downclocked HD6850) and ALOT cheaper.
