Windows won't boot, black screen+cursor only

I installed some IMPORTANT UPDATES (according to Microsoft) and I haven't been able to boot my computer now. It gets past "Windows is starting" and then BLANK.

I tried to do a system restore but it came up with some error saying "choose which operating system you're using then restart" or something similar

I had that same problem with installing windows 7 SP1. End result was a clean install.

maybe right id try a few things before then though lol, unplug everything you can except gfx cpu mem and boot Hdd and see if you can figure out whats making it hang, have you OC'd diff recently

and changeing the sata's operation mode may work ie to AHCI

do you have a linux boot disc or rescue disc as thats a sure fire way to check hardware

and finall thought sos, my mums pc is back with me as it keeps BSOD on boot after an update on the 6th of july and it too wont restore im gona have to reinstall win 7 on it and use a better serial this time or turn auto update off

I wasnt even able to do that for myself when ms plagued me with the black screen of death

i only got the sys restore with the win7 install dvd or a pre made recovery disk you might be able to repair it too by using your install disk to boot from and choosing repair,

it has worked for me a few times(the repair option)

It won't even do that! It keeps saying you booted

I don't think it's that, I've removed the CMOS battery and still no booting

I'll try changing the SATA operation mode

Yeah I tried that but it just went of for ages and AGES, and now it just says "this version of System Recovery Options is not compatible with the version of Windows you are trying to repair"

I tried sytem restore and booting with the last settings that worked

Startup Repair cannot repait this computer automatically:

Problem signature:

Problem event name Startuprepair offline
Problem signature 07: NoOsInstalled

and then:

System Restore:
To use system restore you must specify which Windows installation to restore
Restart this computer, select an OS, and then select system restore
