Thanks Mlee, at the end of the day it might make more sense to spend 450 euro to 'save' a 3000 euro laptop (dangit I'll never do another similar madness again!)

Here's how the slots on my original cards look like:

Before I press my paypal button to buy purecain's 8800M (no offense mate, I'll probably press it just the same so fed up am I using integrated graphics on a laptop which half-works ) I just want to make double sure that no ATI card whatsoever would fit on this laptop?

I'm very sure it is so (but on getting another mobile Nvidia after having two of them die on me, I'm also pretty sure I'll be afraid to do any normal gaming and probably will end up putting the lappie up for sale...)

In my opinion, you'd be better selling the laptop and getting a new one of a gaming spec - I don't think this one is going to give you any joy in working properly in the long run.

Of course, gaming laptops are expensive and the amount of money you have to spend is also a factor here, so ultimately only you can make that decision.

I would not bother buying the new card. Sell what you can and recover. That laptop doesn't need more money put into it. You're not going to get it back in gameplay or in resale value.

yeah it may have been a 3000 euro laptop but it isn't anymore. so 450 euro might be way too steep for its current value.

Black Panther, I'm in the same boat as you. My $2400 Toshiba X205-SLi4 had 2 8600m GT cards in SLI, and those died 4 times. Warranty ran out, and I had to just scrap the laptop and get a new one. My new laptop that I got late last year (Toshiba A665D-S6091) for $699 turned out to be a much better investment. Runs cooler, CPU is faster, the screen is much better, it's half the weight, takes half the power, yet gets the same score in 3DMark06 as my old 2008 laptop. Sometimes, you just have to move on. I should have bought the $1200 Gateway FX with the 8800M GS instead back then.

Exactly. I mean hell, you can buy a pretty sweet core i5 laptop with 4GB+ RAM minimum for $450 in the US brand new ( i know because I just picked up an MSI for $450 for my wife), and with euros that's a lot more cash, so get a nice new laptop, or buy yourself a GTX 580 or something. It's never worth it to invest money into an older laptop in my opinion. It has no resale value whatsoever.

Do you go to LAN parties or game away from home? Why do you feel the need to invest that much in an old graphics chip that is worth nothing in resale value once it's in the laptop?

Thing is at least I won't be buying the card for 450 euro because Purecain is going to sell me an 8800M GTX for £70. I'm just waiting for him to give me his paypal address

At least that way I can sell a working laptop, because since it's got no integrated graphics chip it won't work at all without a card.

Then I'll try to work out what price I can ask for it....... definitely not 3000 euro lol

Hmm, well that's a lot better. If you can find a buyer then go for it if the price is reasonable.

Did you guys ever consider emotional attachment? I know it's dumb, but BP might really love that laptop, like I really love my old Dell Studio Hybrid as it was the first PC I bought with my own money.

That would be our job, we are here to discourage people from developing emotional attachment to a particular object or brand for the benefit of their wallets.

This is highly illogical.

Obviously the higher would be better...

-->me

But better selling it for little, perhaps really cheap for someone who needs a laptop, rather than leave it to waste and deteriorate.

I'm a bit torn as to what would get me a better price --

Do you think I should sell the laptop as a whole working pc or should I sell it in parts?

It's got:

Q9450 (it's a desktop LGA775 processor)
2 x 2 sticks of ddr2 RAM
2 x 160 GB Hitachi HDD's 7200rpm
1 x 8800M GTX....
Motherboard (can obviously be used only for Sager 9262)
6 cell battery still in perfect condition.
Good TFT screen 1920x1200 px with webcam
Keyboard and rest of the body....
200W Power adaptor

Sell it as whole. You won't get shit for parts honestly.

You can probably get it for about €/£500, maybe a bit more or less. Things like this is keeping a roof on your maximum asking prices: http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/MSI_GX660R_1079124.html

Better than nothing..

I'll do a budget gaming desktop build for the summer house next time. Learnt the hard way that gaming laptops are not the way to go.

I'm typing this out from a 10 year old laptop... single core 1.86Ghz, 1GB RAM, integrated graphics, one keyboard key missing, optical drive doesn't work..... But it doesn't complain at all after 5+ hours of SimCity 4

I still have some faith for gaming laptops, mine is still going strong after a year and a half of Starcraft 2 (regularly hitting 1fps in massive 3v3 battles ). Probably not the high end laptops after what you have gone through, but still enough faith for the budget to mid end ones.

Thanks purecain!!!

Your card works perfectly.

40 degrees idle in gpu-z.

I haven't stressed it out... I don't think I will, ya know after having 2 cards die on me.

I've got one nagging doubt though. Could it have been the SLI cable all along? With my previous other 2 cards I had left it in place, but this time I removed it.

IIRC, nVidia recalled all those chips... You may be beyond the timeframe that they offered to have it repaired by manufacturer.
