is GTX 280 SLI still worth?

Hello guys

I have a friend currently using GTX280 SLI gaming rig.. and he don't know whether to upgrade yet or not, and its a tough decision for me also to make.. so I want to ask you guys opinions if his gpu setup can still be powerful until the next gen nvidia cards?

his specs are

i7 2600k
asus maximus 4 extreme
8gb g-skill ripjaws ddr3 2000mhz
2x XFX gtx280
24'' LCD @ 1980-1020

What resolution is he playing at? I would think so unless he is playing a demanding game or games at really high resolution. What is he playing?

If the games still run smoothly at desired settings, there shouldn't be a need for an upgrade. Maybe a GTX 680/690 when they come out could be nice if the itch to get newer equipment grows enough. Those 280s in tandem pack a decent punch still.

Does he like how the games are playing on his rig? Does he have money for an upgrade? Don't know if he can sell the cards. Anyway, apart from DX11 280x2 can handle pretty much everything that's out there. Until the next gen Nvidia cards are out, that's gonna be next year in spring probably I can think of only one game that'll be out and be really taxing and that's BF3. But I expect that he'll be able to go on high settings (not ultra) with acceptable framerates especially since he has a great CPU.

thanks.. for now he don't have the budget to upgrade the gpu as he already use all the money to upgrade from socket AM2+ to sandy bridge and new LCD.. and he prefer to change to new graphic card around Q2 next year..

His upgrade will be a long way off. I propose that is still a little soon. I'm guessing September next year would be the ideal time to retire those 280's if being a heavy gamer.
