Samsung Unveils Slim Portable Blu-ray Writer Drive for Mobile PC Market

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a worldwide leader in digital consumer electronics and information technology, announced today its new slim portable Blu-ray Writer, the SE-506AB optical disk drive (ODD).

SE-506AB features a slim and sleek design with a hi-glossy anti-scratch surface. It is 12 percent smaller than Samsung’s conventional Blu-ray drive to accommodate today’s hectic mobile lifestyle. The slim form factor is also supported with a USB power interface that eliminates the need for a separate electrical outlet.



The SE-506AB drive is compatible with all major operating systems, including Win7 and Mac OS. In addition, the drive features Buffer Under Run technology to prevent errors that may result from writing speeds that exceed data transfer speeds, while also enabling PC multitasking.

Samsung ODD’s exclusive AV connectivity technology is featured on the new SE-506AB allowing users to easily connect and play content via AV connectivity function on multimedia TVs with an available USB port.

The drive also improves upon previous ODD models, which only recognize the first sub-directory and 1000 files. The new SE-506AB model now recognizes and allows access to the fifth sub-directory and more than 3000 files.

The external drive provides a variety of speeds across different data media types featuring BD Quadruple layering. Specific speeds include: 6X BD-ROM, 24X CD-ROM, 24X CD-RW reading and 6X BD-R, 6X BD-R Dual layer, 4X BD-R Quad layer, 8X DVD±R, 5X DVD-RAM, 6X DVD+R Dual layer, 6X DVD-R Dual layer, 8X DVD+RW, 6X DVD-RW recording.

As an eco-friendly product, the drive offers low-power consumption and lead-free soldering technology, a design that complies with international environmental regulations that limit the use of hazardous materials.

The SE-506AB will be available at the end of August 2011 at online retail outlets with a MSRP starting at $140.00.

Price isn't bad, and packaging looks good, but I didn't see if it's USB 3 or USB 2.

6X BD-R requires 216Mbit/sec (~27MB sec). So I don't think you would gain a whole lot by going USB 3.0 vs. 2.0. But that's my personal opinion of course. As someone who remembers burning CDs at x2 speed, I'm patient

Been wanting to get their external DVD writer. Heard a lot of good things. Shame they can't do a BD/DVD combo. Don't need to burn BD here yet but I could use the DVD writer and a BD reader.

not much point for BR burners when HDDs are cheaper per GB lol

and those cheap discs don't count b/c they don't work or last

2tb for 80 bucks or multiple small BR discs for 5-10 bucks each

I guess the only use is if you're selling HD content.

$140 for a BD burner which I don't use is too much. I can get an internal BD/DVDRW for ~$70. Would like an external for $70-$100 so then I could use the BD video on other things. Yeah theres the thought of the future needs. When DVDRWs were out I didn't see myself burning DVDs but now I do. But with Blu-Ray...I dunno. I only own one BD player and thats a PS3 whereas my DVD players are about half a dozen. Flash can fill the same needs for me, or HD storage. External 500GB HD for $60 that I can copy videos onto just makes more sense.

Only burn DVDs when I need to put something on a DVD for relatives who don't have BD so until they got BD, not much of a need.

Awesome, I can backup to bluedisc...wait i have an external drive for that.
Hang on i can watch blueray movies... Not on a screen with a resolution of 1366x768 that would make my eyes bleed and the speakers sound like crap.
maybe i can just lug it around and scream.. OMGLOOKATMYAWSOMEBLUERAYBITCHES!!!11! and have more crap wieghing me down
thus defeating the purpose of an ultraportable in the first place.

some intel IGP's have H264 decoding, but for sure, AMD/nvidia would do it a ton better.
