Intel Releases First Atom ''Cedar Trail'' Processors

Intel released its latest generation of Atom processors, codenamed "Cedar Trail". Unlike earlier expected, the portable (netbook) variants of the new Atom processor aren't launched this day, just the low-power desktop (nettop) variants of Atom D2500 and Atom D2700. Cedar Trail is built on the 32 nm fabrication process, it features faster graphics, more graphics connectivity options (such as DisplayPort), hardware HD video acceleration, and a faster integrated memory controller.

Both the D2500 and D2700 are dual-core processors, with two x86-64 cores, and four logical CPUs for the OS to deal with, using HyperThreading technology. The D2500 is clocked at 1.86 GHz, while the D2700 runs at 2.13 GHz. Both chips feature 1 MB of shared L2 cache, the TDP of both are rated at 10W. New features included with the two are Intel Wireless Display Technology, Fast Boot, and PC Sync. The improved embedded graphics core is capable of 1080p video playback, supports hardware acceleration of popular HD video formats, and supports Blu-ray 2.0 format. Available to OEMs, the Atom D2500 and D2700 are BGA chips, priced at $42 and $52 in 1K quantities, respectively. The portable (netbook) variants of this generation, the N2600 and N2800, are expected to arrive a little later.

Finally netbook CPU's that went past 2GHz... I was getting tired of crappy repacked 1,6GHz cores...

I thought clock speed became irrelevant quite a while ago.

It would have been very smart if Intel had included their thunderbolt technology in this new processor lineup. It would have set it apart from Zacate. As is, it remains an equal contender.

When you're repacking pretty much the same thing over and over again (its what Intel is doing with Atom), clock speed matters as well. It doesn't for AMD Fusion where 1GHz C-50 performs just as good as Intel's 1,6GHz...

But isn't every Intel IGP, powered by imagination? Which makes sense cause they can only imagine good CPUs .

Not really, most Atom's use a derivate of GMA950 (just again repackaged). Only exception were some CPU's that were using GMA500 which was not an Intel branded GPU. It was just as crappy though from what i heard, but it could accelerate HD videos though...

i guess it will fail to be effecient as the c-60's? and i am sure the c60's have better graphics capabilities.

Performance vs. C2 ?

I'm eagerly awaiting the benchmarks. These are the same clockspeeds the 65W TDP Core2 Duo E6300/E6400 ran at (but without hyperthreading) so I'd love to see how them perform head to head.

e350's alone do 14W total with CPU+GPU. this is a not much of a feat really. but yes i guess the 2.0ghz does count

These are pointless releases to me...

ARM still the best in terms of performance per watt... Intel woke up too late...

ATI used to do this, but then they sold that division.

ARM is the most efficient in power, but hardly in performance. It takes a dual core 1.2Ghz ARM with samsungs own GPU to make my phone awesome. But the graphics still look like my K6 550 and 7500.

Yes, ARM is weak sauce relegated to to small locked down proprietary devices.

This Intel release could be a major problem for AMD if the price is right and it performs as well as Zacate. The netbook market is pretty much dead so that leaves x86 tablets, mini ITX servers and HTPC's that AMD and Intel will be fighting over and Intel wins that fight due to unfair leverage over OEMS and brand recognition.

And they should have additional interface links, so you can go 2, 3, 4-way SMP with them.

In related news these are still Atom processors. They feature the ability to play 1080p content in slide picture mode instead of video mode.

For the record, I'd still take a 1Ghz C-50 dual core Bobcat over any (and I mean any) Atom.

Well i'm still on the first Atom that arrived to the world (the N270). It's not bad but compared to any AMD Fusion offfering, any Atom GPU part is just pathetic. Yesterday i watched a video of someone playing Dirt 2 on netbook. I could run it if it doesn't strictly demand SM3.0 or TnL (which 99% of games these days do, even indie ones), but would probably run in slideshow mode as well.
The reason why i'd change is the GPU at most. Because it's a proper full fledged DX11 chip. Compared to Intels half broken stuff that's being repacked for ages. The GPU that's with my N270 is exactly the same as the one that comes with N570 for example. They just stuffed it inside CPU and called it GMA3150. While in reality its still just a repacked GMA950...
