ZOTAC Announces ZBOX Nano VD01

ZOTAC International, a leading innovator and channel manufacturer of graphics cards, motherboards and mini-PCs, today launches the latest addition to the ZBOX nano product lineup with the new ZBOX nano VD01 series – an affordable palm-sized mini-PC powered by a VIA Nano X2 processor.

The ZOTAC ZBOX nano VD01 series combines the latest VIA Nano X2 U4025 CPU and VX900H media system processor for outstanding energy-efficiency and performance. VIA Chrome9 graphics with ChromotionHD 2.0 processing enables the ZOTAC ZBOX nano VD01 series to deliver silky-smooth playback of popular high-definition video formats, including Blu-ray, MPEG2, H.264, VC-1 and streaming Internet video.

The ZOTAC ZBOX nano VD01 series packs plenty of expansion capabilities with space to accommodate a 2.5-inch SATA drive and DDR3 SO-DIMM module – ZBOX nano VD01 Plus models include a 320GB SATA hard drive and 2GB of DDR3 preinstalled – internally, while USB 3.0, USB 2.0 and eSATA ports are available for external expansion.

Can't decide whether to take it serious or laugh, it looks so cute

Apparently barebone's is $130 to EU265, too expensive for a modded wifi router with NAS capable features.

Not sure what makes the $12-$50 retail price hardware worth the price they want for this.

Things are getting smaller and smaller. Here is the mITX machines we use at work. They have a C2D T series chip and 2GB DDR2 SODIMM. they have DVI/HDMI intel graphics. its about the size of a DVD case

I really think that is where the PC market needs to head if it is going to stay alive. Like so many dinosaurs, the PC does not see that flaming asteroid approaching...the asteroid of no one buying a large ugly noisy box to do what a small, attractive, silent box can do.

I arrived at this perspective after spending years improving OEM PC products through customization.

Look at any utilitarian device...take the car for instance. Sure there will always be people that want huge exhaust pipes and a giant engine sticking out of the hood dripping in chrome and billet aluminum...but what the majority actually buy are cars they can afford to maintain and that require as little fuel as possible to get the job done.

I am no longer part of the tiny segment of PC users that endlessly upgrade and throw money at the box. I use a PC to do this: get online and read and post. I don't care what it looks like...I just need the utility it provides. The Zotac Nano is pretty much what I would build myself...a tiny box that is quiet and just gets the job done without ponying up for a Microshaft operating system.
