SSD Need Recommendations

Been looking around for a SSD, can't decide on whats best. So I need some recommendations

Capacity: 60Gb +
Price: $125
Primary Use: OS (Windows 7 64-bit)/ Maybe a few apps

I've been looking at getting one and been reading around a bit. From what I gather Intel for pure reliability, and Crucial M4 for solid reliability and good (not great) speeds. I personally would stay away from Sandforce controllers due to the large number of people that have had problems with them but I have not owned one so I'm not speaking from experience.

Yeah i was looking threw that review earlier... I just don't want something to over kill for a drive that will more than likely only have OS on it.

But I've been look at mostly OCZ Vertex/Agility and Corsair Force

SandForce claims to have tracked down the major bug in the firmware on their latest controller with the help of OCZ and have supposedly fixed it, but OCZ's SSD guy Tony warns that not everyone may see their problems fixed with the latest firmware, though a number of users have found stability with it.

As for the old SATAII drives using a SandForce controller, a number of users are claiming they have died on them in less than a year.

You could go with a Crucial M4 64GB $110 (SATAIII) or SAMSUNG 470 64GB $120 (SATAII) or for $5 more the new SAMSUNG 830 64GB $130 (SATAIII).

Those will probably be the more stable options, based on what you are looking for.

Otherwise just go with a SandForce controlled drive.

SATAII:

OCZ Agility 2 60GB for $105
OCZ Vertex 2 60GB for $105
Corsair Force Series F60 60GB for $105

OCZ Agility 2 80GB for $125 ($105 after MIR)
OCZ Vertex 2 80GB for $135
Corsair Force Series F80 80GB for $130

SATAIII:

OCZ Agility 3 60GB for $107 ($87 after MIR)
OCZ Vertex 3 60GB for $125 ($115 after MIR)
Corsair Force Series 3 60GB for $110
Corsair Force Series GT 60GB for $120

Even though your listed board only supports SATAII, the SandForce SF-2281 controller, regardless of it's bugs, does scale well, and if you decide to go with one of the new SATAIII drives using a SandForce controller I would go for either the Corsair Force Series GT 60GB or the OCZ Vertex 3 60GB.

It's a shame the Corsair Force Series 3 120GB is out of stock, for $15 more you could have purchased it for $140 and then after MIR it would have only been $110.

I actually purchased a Corsair Force Series 3 120GB this summer for my X58 system, even on SATAII the drive was fast, but it did suffer from the random drop outs the SF-2281 has become known for. I just purchased an OCZ Agility 3 120GB last weekend, this is my second day with it.

So I think i'm gonna go with the OCZ Vertex 3 60GB

You might want to wait for that or maybe not.

Definitely recommend the sandforce based Corsair Force 120GB's if you go SATA II. The Force 120gb SATA III is awesome also. My original 120's are still blazing fast and totally stable. I have been fortunate and haven't had a single issue with them. No sleep glitches, no degradation, nothing. They run as fast as the day I bought them in February. I can't comment on any other drive as these are the only ones I've used.

Honestly at this point in the SSD stage, I only trust 3 brands: Intel, Crucial, and Corsair. Intel and Crucial for obvious reasons, and Corsair because they have superb customer service and technical support. If anything goes wrong, they won't dick you around. I picked up 2 OCZ drives recently for amazing prices, but I sold them off today for huge profit and I'll be buying a Crucial M4 soon.

It may be a couple of weeks before they start spreading to online retailers.

I recommend Crucial M4, with the new firmware has a very good performance.

I returned an OCZ 240GB something3 for BSOD. I replaced it with a Crucial M4 256GB. The 4K read/write performance is great. Just what I needed for an OS boot and game drive.
