Multimeter + IOS = Profit???
Californian company Redfish Intruments have released the iDVM, a multimeter that uses your iProduct as the interface. It communicates wirelessly with the iProduct and does everything you expect a good multimeter to do plus datalogging up to 20 times/second.
Linky Linky and specs. Price is $295. Thought it was pretty darn cool. Only for iOS so far though.

Say you pay about $275 for the data logging feature and get the added annoyance of it relying on your iThing?
One would think that data logging could be added to the multimeter itself for a fraction of the price. |

I see the reliance on the iThing as a feauture. You can measure over a distance and the iThing becomes the interface itself plus you can upload the data directly to a web server or mail it or whatever. Most multimeters don't do that.

Totally, but wireless plus connection to a smartphone is cooler imo. Also this uses the iDevice as an interface and display.

it might be 'cooler', but the sort of people that would have a reason to pay that much for a multimeter would probably prefer to just use a Windows/Mac PC, which will be much easier in the long run

Depends on the situation. If you're out in the field this is a lot easier than to fire up a netbook to do the same thing. I agree that it might not be a gamebreaker if you don't have an iDevice already but if you do I don't really see a downside to it (except maybe the lack of a display at the multimeter itself).

I'd rather use a real meter then become an ivictum to isheep marketing.
Meter: Turn on, test the circuit. isheep: Turn on imeter, turn on iphone, bluetooth configuration, application install, application launch, cost of help hired to hold the iphone while you test the circuit. Conclusion: FAIL *edited for your protection

Not to mention I would much rather be using a good rugged multimeter than an iProduct that will break the moment it realizes it's in an industrial setting. |

Other than that, this thing is obviosly not for quick testing. Yeah, that is what they do. They sense the environment and breaks. Yes.

Quite frankly, the idea of using a smartphone/iPhone for some datalogging is sensible - until you start having to pay a lot of money for addons, probes etc.
Otherwise it's an entirely daft idea - pull out a decent multimeter which is half the price of an iProduct and get the job done properly without half a million things that can impair results in the middle. Some jobs are best done with the CORRECT tools. As for worrying about iWhores and moronic gits like Jobs passing - don't, and please don't insult people's intelligence by assuming any form of offence. Jobs may have had his good side but like Apple, on the whole there is a lot of wrongdoing. Therefore Apple and iTakethePiss names are all fair game. After all, they've been taking the piss out of us for years... |

hmmm for $300 I could get a good real meter. Seems like a major gimmick with all the normal gimmickyness of an iCrap.
As fr the need to own an iSomething. Nope there never will be nor is there now. I will take something PC/android based over apple still.
