I don't believe for one minute that the majority of those are from users with the intent or the know how.
I have seen shitloads of corperate edition installed on machines that were backyard buys from a local place, and this same scenario everywhere from California to Colorado.

You guys might have a point, on the "false positives"...
A pal of mine has Windows XP HOME, & it's DEFINITELY legit (I've seen the packaging he got it in, etc.) & he has had to call up MS a few times to get them 'straight' that he's NOT 'stealing' their 'intellectual property' to validate his install, etc. APK |

Mine is legal, and I've read that false positives are quite rare. Did your friend have to phone up about activation Alec, or was it directly linked to the Genuine Advantage tests? I have to phone up M$ every time I reinstall, but I pass the GA tests no problem. You can get passed them anyway, but I don't know quite how.

i have 3 real ones(2oem, 1 retail), only one will be upgraded to vista though (well maybe 2 when i hand down my not yet purchased dx10 card to my second rig)
one of the oem ones is a right pain with activation (on reinstall) and WAS with GA, but has behaved recently |

Mine is legal, and I have a couple copies laying around.
I have never installed a illegal copy. The price is so low for OEM that it is absurd to not buy it. If you can't afford it, then mebey use a beta or Linux. If you have to have windows then pay. I am not talking about false positives either, just a corporate edition installed on a bunch of machines illegally, and most will never know or care. Unless they want something that they have to validate for.

2.5 legit copies & 1 "shady":
1 from MS employee purchase (only $35!). 2 OEM (one used, the other lost). 1 Enterprise XP Machine (inherited from work along with a P4 1.8Ghz, RDRAM, lol), not even plugged in. |
