[Official] Need for Speed: The Run

I can't believe no one bothered to post about it till now!? I've got it yesterday but the release date check disallowed me to run it early. Anyway, 18th November is the official release date for Europe so here it is. I must say i'm sort of positively surprised. For the first few stages, the game feels pretty good. Great and fast graphics thanks to Frostbite 2 engine, very good driving model and loads of cars. There are also segments where you have to press certain buttons like in Fahrenheit game (or most console games nowadays). So far only 1 such sequence so racing is still the major part of the game. I still have a lot to go by, but so far it feels pretty solid. We'll see how it is through the game. Idea of stage racing through entire continent is much better than stupid open world that was a trend few years ago. And if i'm honest i really hope future NFS's will be based on this idea. So The Run 2 might go from New York down to Brasil so you get another really long route. And for The Run 3, maybe a run through Europe/Asia. A very long shot but you never know... clearly enough material for it.

Anyway, back to the current game... If anyone already got it, maybe we could exchange usernames so we can add eachother as friends and maybe play one or two races online

It's an okay game overall but I still liked the past releases such as high stakes and NFS III Hot pursuit. Thing is it got a bit too repetitive and I managed to beat it in 2 hours flat. What was fun was recognizing all the signs and streets when I got to Chicago XD

Haha, Death Valley segment was the craziest one so far. Especially the last part of it, the part where you get your stomach going zero gravity If this road really exist, i want to go really fast there one day

i want this game but i dont think deserve my money... I must have an exchange with some of my old games.

How do you unlock the BMW M3 of that glorious Most Wanted ??

In my opinion was better than all Underground series.

Shift 3 is already planned for 2012...

Well, if you're going from A to B, it can hardly be less linear from that. However you do have plenty of shortcuts around in each segment. Besides, we got non linear open world in bunch of NFS and quite frankly, they were rubbish. The best one was Most Wanted and it wasn't like that because of the open world. All the other things made it great. And once you were in the race it was just as linear as in The Run. Or any other game in that matter. Only trully non linear game was Midtown Madness where you could openly pick your route when going through the checkpoints. But then again, there wasn't much choice because the best route was usually the one that opponents went on anyway...

the premise is a cannonball run from point A to Z with story beats but there is no danger of losing. if you can't pass 6 racers and move on to the next area it will just restart and if that isn't enough hand holding the game has a checkpoint system.

they put the quick time events at the bottom instead of center screen so it's hard to pay attention.

too much rubber banding.

This game is pretty lousy. If you want to play a newer NFS game, just get the latest Hot Pursuit.

Well, they could make a free run i guess but then again it would be hard to balance the game. You might think you'll made it just to find out in the very end of the race that you can't pass 1 or 2 racers in the required time. And you'd have to go the entire game all over again. Not exactly enjoying right? Quick time events, even though is crewed up few of them, they last fairly long so even if keys aren't displayed in the center of screen, it's enough time to smash the keys.

Does it mattter what it says in the menu if the wheel works? I mean what difference does a name make if it says x-box controller, Turd Twist Steering Controller or a Fanatec Wheel ? I also don't see how a 30fps lock could affect anything. I'm usually very framerate sensitive and i don't see anything anoying by the fps lock. I'll check it with fraps or Afterburner what framerate i actually have...

That one is a POS too. Most Wanted was the most recent, decent NFS title and that was...6 years ago? I'm prepared to be disappointed with The Run.

Edit: I'm up to Las Vegas and my impressions so far is that it isn't as good as Most Wanted but it is among the best since Most Wanted. Most Wanted has more replay value and is overall more fun. The appeal of The Run is the fact it is a canonball run. It sucks that they start you off in relatively crappy cars (not as crappy as most games start you with though) but, even if it is completely unecessary, they always put you on a learning curve.

I take it you like the game then If it was just a simple naming issue I'm sure he wouldn't mind but I'm feeling that it has probably skewed all the controls if it is being physically seen as a 360 controller.

Also, I have nothing against the 30fps lock per se, with some engines/games 30fps can look smooth as silk, but at least give end users the option of running it either with the console lock of 30fps or maximising a powerful PC and getting the full uber smooth 60fps, it's just lazy IMO.

It's a bit choppy in "video" sequences and the sequence right before the race. At that point it could be a 30fps smooth problem but other than that i don't know. Maybe i'd change my mind if i could compare 30fps lock and no framerate limit...

I saw that too. Right at the beginning where they slowly move the perspective around a Porsche it was getting choppy. Not really bad, but noticable. The actual racing has been butter smooth for me.

Edit: I have to call BS on the Calvin Garrett challenge. After about a dozen attempts, I managed to beat him by jumping, ramping off a straight truck (so, so, lucky that didn't give me "Wasted") and he crashed into it. It only put him back about 2 seconds and he was at less than .3 seconds again when I crossed the line. In short, that challenge is impossible to beat if he doesn't crash into stuff. I think it's because he isn't penalized for all the hills at the end of the track where you are (getting air-time 3-4 times). He gained .5 to a full second every time I hit one of those jumps. So yeah, BS I say.

Edit: Beat in under 10 hours on normal using zero resets (probably would have been under 4 hours if I used resets). Game time to complete the run (excluding all retries and loading times) was 2:11:42.

What irks me the most is games like Test Drive Unlimited 2 have several hundred mile long races around an entire island that last longer than that. I think this game should be filed in the $5 or less bin. I expected it to try to be true to life (~2,500 miles or at least 15 hours) but obviously that isn't what's here. You only play little snapshots of the course here and there. Not to mention, South Dakota is a little out-of-the-way for a San Francisco to New York City run.

I just bought it on sale with a coupon from paypal for $15 and it is OK, no where near the driving experience the first underground and the last NFS I ever bought was.

Im almost to vegas and a level 5 almost 6 driver and the cops are stupid, pulling ahead of my BMW on NOS at 150+MPH like I hit the brakes? Riggghhhhhttt.

Graphics are OK in some areas, the general graphics are crap compared to Dirt titles, it runs easily on my card though, I have all the settings cranked and pretty smooth play, other than it does seem to have a few jumpy scenes. Music is only OK too.

So far I give the game a 5/10 as it seems like a console game, I have had numerous alcoholic drinks and am still beating the shit out of it (normal difficulty) and the buttons on the xbox controller are a bit off from other games.

I wouldn't pay more than $20 for it, and had a racer not sounded good I probably would have better spent my money elsewhere.

Atari can go fuck themselves though after the shit that was TDU. I promise to only sail the high seas for anything they make.
