(newbies usually start kicks swinging low from the floor because their balance sucks, you notice that professional fighters lift their knee to their waist height first before throwing the foot forward...more torque and you can use your stomach muscles to put extra "oomf" into the kick)
its quite easy to intercept a swinging blow, as it takes longer to reach the target than a straight on attack (linear vs radial). And when you do intercept it, you can put the ball of your foot on the inside of their knee (in between their legs), apply pressure so that their knee hits the floor, and then generally with enough leverage you can pop the kneecap out from its associated joint

quite nasty, but funny in practice

or if they are just standing there and they look at you funny slamming the ball of you foot intop the spot just above the kneecap serves it purposes as well

doesnt work unless their leg is totally straight though.
any bend in the knee at all will protect it from a frontal kick, because while their leg is on the floor, if you hit it your just bending their knee more as they pull back away from your attack.

One guy was throwing a punch, or airswing as i should call it, as he threw it from the relative safety of at least 2 metres from the target. Whilst not even looking where his fist was heading, instead opting to protect his face by looking behind him.
