ASUS to Outsource Motherboard to Cal-Comp Electronics

Today ASUS announced that they will be outsourcing a portion of their motherboard manufacturing to Cal-Comp Electronics. The total amount is estimated to be around 5 or 6 million motherboards out of a total shipment forecast of 24.5 million units for 2012. This is somewhat a surprise move by ASUS as they originally outsourced its motherboard orders to Pegatron and other smaller ODMs in Southern China.

The reasons for the shift are unknown. Cal-Comp currently has production bases in Thailand, China, Malaysia, Brazil and Mexico and is mainly manufacturing PC peripherals and components such as printers, external hard drive and printed circuit board (PCB) as well as communication products such as set-top box (STB), handsets and Bluetooth earphones.

The real concern is whether Cal-Comp Electronics has good quality manufacturing.

I would never buy an Asus card simply because their design is not as effective as it could be and I find them to be rather ugly as well as being too large for my taste.

I hope ASUS' quality doesn't get effected by this. Maybe it's for their lower end boards?

Yeah. I sure hope the motherboard quality stays the same.

I agree with the comments on their GPUs... I never was excited about them...

Will it be possible to tell where a board came from? as in will it be possible for a reviewer to know who made the board and compare quality?

I hope the quality is up to the same standard as ASUS boards have been in the past as my current board is my first from ASUS and it has taken years of abuse and increased voltages in a relatively hot and humid environment yet still runs perfectly so i intended to look to asus board reviews first when upgrade time comes.

Must be cheaper to outsource them to the other company than Pegatron- probably their lower models.

I bet the boards will take some sort of initial hit to quality, probably not too noticeable to the average user, but it'll go back up once they've gotten settled in.

Asus has very lil stock in AsRock, AsRock is an independent company from Asus as of last Year. Their Products have definitly changed in performance and reliability and compete even with the best Asus, Gigabyte, and MSI Motherboards out there

If components were made in the USA, do you have any idea how much more expensive they'd be? Over here they actually have to pay the workers half-decent wages.

It sucks either way.

The US is actually still the largest country in terms of manufacturing, so I doubt it would be too much of a drawback. I think the major difference is we have Environmental Regulations that prevent them from dumping hazardous chemicals everywhere and such.

Wrong.

This is why electronics are generally not made in the USA.

Don't know how to take this, but I've been buying ASUS mobo's for a while now due to the quality. If the quality goes down, here I come MSI.

Are you kidding me ? Man I do not want to get into this all but I will point out the fact that America is some how losing the tech industry for child labor and creep crap ! Made in china does NOT stand for quality ! And it pains me to see every thing made in other countries just because you can make it cheaper it just doesn't make any sense at all ! There are tons more reasons and we can go on and on and on about it . But I can tell you this I am sick of the fact that every thing in the tech industry must be made every place other than the USA !

Well, for the record, I don't exactly endorse it. It's just kind of a double-edged sword and most people are too short-sighted to care about anything other than getting stuff for cheap.
