GTX 580 or Wait for the coming Next Gen GPU

My GTX 280 is dying and I had to underclocked it from its default clock 670/1458/1250 to 602/1310/1107. I can no longer play a decent game on it because of the artifacting; Pink Screen of Death (PSOD) on high caliber 3d games, random crashing. Though, I can still watch hd movies and play BioShock 2.

do you think prices of GTX 580 will drop on the release of AMD 7000 Series?

Buy one now or wait for a price drop...or check the buy/sell/trade section and get a temporary GPU for a relatively low price while waiting for the new-gen.

As soon as the 7970 goes on sale so will a bunch of second hand 580s. Nvidia won't officially drop the price if the 7970 is priced above it. Either get a cheap 580 or grab a 79x0.

Has it been confirmed that they're skipping the 6 series? The only thing saying otherwise is some fake graph. Though the graph could be real and we haven't seen the 6 series graph.

Uneconomical... I'm thinking, it's either get the current best available GTX 580 now (Been eying for MSI Lightning Xtreme) or wait for the newer next gen.

I'd say wait for AMD 79XX series then decide what do you want after the release, there might be a price drop on GTX 580 even if unlikely, at best you'd get more performance for your money

Wait for Nvidias next gen cards and pick up a 2nd hand GTX480 there cheap and there only 10% slower than a 580.

or if your in the USA *shameless plug* by my 2 month old

MSI 6950 2gb Twin Frozr III PE / OC that with racer X and power tune mod for 50% can hit up to 1000 core if you play with it nicely which puts it above 6970 and just below stock 580 performance

I would say no matter what you decide to do or buy you should at least wait for the 7970 reviews as they are almost out and even if there is no price drops there could be a bunch of people selling cards relatively cheap and possibly even the MSI 580 that you have had your eye on.

....what? How is waiting a day for cheap second hand 580s uneconomical? For that matter, why pay $600 for a brand new 580 that's slower than the cheaper 79x0? Now that's "uneconomical." And from what you've described you may not make it to the "newer next gen."

No, you didn't get my point... What I want is just to buy a single high-end GPU that will last for years, Not to buy a 2nd hand and throw it off because a new next gen comes up. If I bought an MSI Lightning Xtreme now, I won't get a Kepler and just wait for Maxwell or I may just as well don't change my GPU at all till its dead.

I have actually no plans on replacing my GTX 280 if its still functional until now but it seems its years of service is at its end. I'm no enthusiast but the kind of guy that will only replace his GPU when its already dead and replace it with currently the 'best' available GPU.

Wait for the 7970 if you think that little performance bump is worth it. If you can't wait, then just get a 580 now. The 7970 is priced appropriately above the 580, so I doubt nvidia will drop their price. Personally, I don't think the improvement is that great with the 7970. Eyefinity is probably the best reason to get it.

7970 also seems to have the greatest overclocking potential of any recent card...

“However, the Intel CPU dispatcher does not only check which instruction set is supported by the CPU, it also checks the vendor ID string. If the vendor string is "GenuineIntel" then it uses the optimal code path. If the CPU is not from Intel then, in most cases, it will run the slowest possible version of the code, even if the CPU is fully compatible with a better version. ”

Wow! Awesome!
I'm really not a fanboy of nVidia but I'm getting a bit excited on its next gen this coming march.

Guess I'll have to squeeze out a little more life on my GTX 280.

Buy a GTX580 now, youll get a great deal/price for one and its immensly powerful!
I upgraded to one recently as whenever a new card comes out its never as impressive as its paper release specs have you believe. The gtx580 on the other hand is a seriously powerful card capable of playing any game maxxed out and this is unlikely to change for a long time as most games are console ports.

My card easily does 1000mhz core without even having to ramp up the fan speeds, runs virtually silent due to a fantastic cooler, looks stunning with its LED lights and blazes through and and all benchmarks, games and encoding tasks I give it

Yeah sure the 7XXX series will probably use less power, but it will also cost a lot and probably wont be that much quicker than a gtx580 if at all! Dont believe paper launches

Ok, I voted for buy a GTX 580 now and wait for a price drop. By that, I mean to wait no more than a month or so, to see how the price of the new kid on the block affects it. We've already been seeing some cheapish offers on this card.

Also, in what way is your GTX 280 dying?

Easily do 1000MHZ without high fans speeds?

I have to question that (not in a rude way!). Run the 3DMark11 benchmark (free version) and post your results in the 3DMark11 compilation thread (read the rules). That clock speed would get you in the top 4 with a reasonable cpu.

PSOD. It's a common GTX 280 issue; sign's of death pattern. I think that's why GTX 285 we're soon released after 280.

You can see it in many different forums having this problem with their GTX 280 and again and again experiencing it after RMA till the manufacturer itself replaced it with GTX 285.
Link here, here and here.
Images here and here.
You can also google it and see tons of results regarding this matter.

It's hard to believe but I fixed it by actually baking it in a traditional oven.
They say the cause's we're tear & wear, micro fractures, VRAM issues.

GTX 580 is already cheap for the performance

Forget AMD go buy GTX 580 now makes less noise than the 7000 series from AMD and the drivers are mature and reliable.
