With that rig you most likely going to want CCCP codex pack using Media Player Classic as the player.

You could try XBMC and it requires no codex at all. But I think your a little under powered for that. But its worth try

if a quad and an 8800 cant handle movies then i dont know what to say. that rig is fine. and their is no need imo for the cccp bloat. use XBMC or run windows and use the klite codec pack i grab the mega it has some stuff i dont need but sometimes i do find uses for them. if you decide to install it on the drop down choose "lots of stuff:without player" and on the following screens make sure everything is checked. That machine is loads better then some of the PCs iv worked on that the user watched BD rips etc on. klite plays everything iv ever come across and supports stuff iv never heard of. and those specs are absolutely fine for even the biggest files.

in my day moderators didnt de-rail threads. ill go look for the policy change. either way i suppose it doesnt matter. its personal choice. Iv never come across issues with klite, i did with CCCP but nothing i couldnt fix. all personal preference. im sure people have had issues with klite. I peg most of those problems to people that dont know how to configure a codec.

And XBMC does not require codex. Where did you get quad and an 8800. He has a single core Duron with a ATI Radeon 9600 AGP

Ok my bad sorry.......I was looking at your system specs?

VLC or The KMPlayer. I haven't used a codec pack in like 7 years. I just don't see the point when VLC and The KMPlayer have all the decoders and codecs you need for anything built it. KM is a little faster and cleaner. Its advanced video options are easier to use, but VLC has a slightly broader support base.

The all real issue I have had with KMP is some sub title formats don't work. This is why I keep VLC as a backup. This is very rare though maybe 1 in every 1000 files.

If you are using Windows Media Center, I am not sure if they have support for additional codec installation. If they do, I am not sure where you would get them from anyway.

performance. CCCP with MPC-HC in 2D overlay mode is the only way i could get my netbook to playback 720p anime smoothly.

my favorite to use is the media player classic home cinema. it plays everything and has a simple interface. keep it updated. don't install divx, it resets file associations when updated

Hi,

I can recommend Daum Potplayer which is made by the same guy who made KMPlayer; he sold the KMPlayer to some company that's called pandora.tv; currently, KMPlayer is a mess and it includes some horrible adware (although I have only used KMPlayer just for more than a half year ago, so I know nothing about the latest version of KMPlayer). You can use Potplayer "out of the box", you don't even need to install a separate codec pack, since all the codecs are already built in into the player, including DXVA1 and DXVA2 support. Although you can also download the free LAV video filters for the built-in LAVCUVID (CUDA Video Decoding) hardware acceleration (expecially for Nvidia's gpus with VP4 support) which support many video formats for Nvidia gpus and for trouble-free 10bit H.264 playback, which is already much better than the CoreAVC payware (which only support H.264).

^ just because i looked up LAV due to TC-mans post, seems the latest CCCP includes that as well. i cant do any testing on it since i run ATI, however.

and coreavc has supported 10 bit for a while now, but since i dont use it (again, not nvidia. CPU only i find CCCP's codecs to work better) i dont know how good it is.

I use Kmplayer on my netbook, plays stuff pretty well, including mkv( VLC is bad at MKV when you skip) Use VLC when you want the volume really loud. GOM player is pretty good too.

In short- try Kmplayer

i will say go with the newest version of CCCP, and if u want to use ur 8800GS to decode h264/x264/ccv1 in both 8 and 10bit go with CoreAVC it's supported by CCCP aswell so it's easy to activate.

it's only $12,99 if u wanna try it out, i use it all the time and it just works ^^

i think that depends on what u wanna use ur HTPC for other than just movies and music, bcs if u wanna use it for like netsurfing and all that i think u r fine with Win7 32bit actually bcs u can also easy share things from ur own pc, lappy on wireless and so on.

but in basic depends on how much u wanna get into something like xbmc, boxee and what they all r called.

Your day got ended by the boss for a reason.

If you ask me codec packs aren't the relevant thing when creating a HTPC. UI is. XBMC is an option, or you could try mediabrowser. Install any codec pack you like and get a remote control.
