Message From Kreij
I've been gone for awhile and I just wanted to let everyone know what's up. There is no real forum for that, so I figured I'd post it here.
On the morning of Dec 22nd I was taken by ambulance to the emergency room for severe abdominal pain. The discovered that I had a perforated appendix and immediately rushed me into surgery to perform an appendectomy. Everything seemed to be good, so they released me on Christmas Eve to come back home. On Chistmas day I had my wife take me back to the ER as I was vomitting profusely. They determined that my digestive tract had completely shut down and everything was backing up on me. They jammed a tube through my nose into my stomach and pumped out lots of vile crap. Over about the next week they were trying to get everything going again, and the lab report came back that the problem with my appendix was caused by a cancerous tumor, so more surgery was planned for a few weeks down the road. My condition did not improve and after days of testing they found that I had a partially obstructed small intestine and rush me back into surgery to remove the problem and also performed a right hemicolectomy (removed a 3rd of my large intestine) to get everything that may have been affected by the cancer. That was new years day. I spent the next 8 days in the hospital once again working to get my digestive tract going normally with a tube shoved up my nose (a NG tube as it's called is something you want to avoid if possible as it is really rather irritating after many days), and I was finally released today (Jan 9th) and am back at home recovering. The future holds more testing for possible cancer spread (although things looked pretty clean when they had me opened up and went all Ginsu to chop out part of my guts), and likely will verture into oncology (chemotherapy) treatment. I'm pretty wiped out from the surgeries and laying in the hopital for 18 days, but over time should get my energy back and hopefully emerge cancer free at some point. I consider the staff and members of TPU good friend and wanted to let you know what's going on and why I may not be on a whole lot in the near future as I recover. I hope all of you had a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and look forward to slugging it out on the forums with all of you. God bless you all. Dean

Take your time, get plenty of rest and don't overdo things. Everything will still be there when you get better. It is really good to hear that you will be making a full recovery. Take care of yourself Kreij.

I'll be praying for you, Dean. We're going over the abdominal cavity in med school right now, so if you've a question and don't want to bother any of your current docs feel free to shoot this future doc the question, and I'll do what I can to answer it for you!
