Seeing that I don't really follow the high end GPU race I had no expectations. So yes.
![]() It will be interesting to see how the 78xx, 77xx and 76xx cards perform though.

I think Nvidia is putting all their money on this "mid range" 7970 killer. They are basically launching their highest end card that they can sucessfully build at the moment and labeling it as a mid-range. Rather cunning move but it could really end up hurting them in the end. |

Rather then look at the steep price tag, look at the investment. How long do you sit in front of your computer? Add all those hours up and divide by cost of your system. I have 170 hours in BF3 and 130 hours in Skyrim. 300 hours / $550 = .54 an hour for the best graphics you can get. Knowing I will own this card for a couple years means it will cost me cents per use. Pretty cheap really for the experience when you look long term.

I think that is how I will present this to my GF, before she tries to cut my balls off for spending $600 on a card and then complaining about money.

i feel the 7970 has met my expectations price dosent seem that bad either, I am however waiting on aftermarket cooled cards to land,
i see it as worthwhile upgrade at stock it may seem a bit underwhelming but push it to 1000 core and performance tends to be close enough to 6950 crossfire to make it a viable switch, I had 6950 xfire, and while performance was great games like Skyrim, and Shogun 2 could see performance gains today but there gone tomorrow it was a headache, 7970 offers same performance when clocked lower TDP and at the same price, I had 2x 6950 Twin Frozr III PE / OC cards at $300 a pop means my 6950s in order to get quiet cards that stay cool cost me MORE then a 7970 will so in my situation its a free sidegrade with no real downside, no xfire issues more vram for games like shogun 2 and skyrim where mods eat vram for breakfast (shogun 2 can use upwards of 3gb of Vram) less power means less heat its something new for me to play with. As an enthusiast the last point is important, once I am bored with my hardware I feel less inclined to game and less likely to use my PC. So having something new to shake things up is always nice. and so what if Nvidia turns out faster? ill just sell the 7970 and buy a 680 or 780 or w.e the hell they call it when the time comes |

With my 7970, I can now enjoy BF3 on the settings that I play (Ultra with Shadows on high and an AA 'hack' / ini file tweak), without ever having to endure a dip below 60FPS. This puts a smile on my face, but I am not sure if I can honestly say that this smile is worth £430 (I got lucky and got one 'cheap'). The truth is, I feel better for having my 7970, as I am no longer plagued by the obsessive urge to be constantly scouring the web for news on the next latest and greatest retail consumer gfx technology. So in that sense, my 7970 was worth getting, but only because I suffer from some weird kind of 21st century mental disorder.......and the same thing could probably be said for the majority of members on this website. As erocker suggested, apart from BF3, the only times where a 7970 is needed is for excessive graphical features and/or horribly optimised games......(7970 will still not max out Crysis with 4MSAA without dropping frames) |

My 5850 has paid for itself and then some. If I had the cash I would be all over the 7970. But as Erocker said nothing out really MAKES me upgrade or justify the money. There is no game like Quake 3 out where I wanna build a system to play it.

The 7970 is made for resolutions including and above 1920x1200. Anything under that and you may as well upgrade your monitor first before spending the cash on the card. Although I understand why you did it, to get away from xfire. which that in itself is a good move if you are happy with it, one of the main reasons I upgraded.

Testicles...
Too expensive for me. Even 7950. Things will not be good until Kepler hits the shelves and prices fall. |
