Using a laptop as a repeater?
I have a interesting situation to discuss.
See we have a work laptop that is used by my dad, but it is forced to be hard wired to the internet, via our wireless netgear box, but (it has 4 wired ports on it) The thing is my dad wants to ahve the ability to move to other areas of the house, or out back (back porch) if he wanted to, but the idea of hard wiring the house is just not there. We plan on moving in a year or so and to hard wire is a waste. The idea is to take another laptop, and connect the two with Ethernet cables, and get the work laptop to connect to the internet, via the second laptop. Basically were fooling the work laptop into thinking it is connecting via the cable, when in reality the cable is running to another laptop which then sends the signal via wireless, or air card down the road. So i know i have seen this before but my question is how do i go about doing this, as it seems that the secondary laptop's settings would have to be modified to turn it into a repeater basically?

could you not just buy a USB wireless G stick?
for example Cisco Valet AM10 IEEE 802.11b/g/n USB 2.0 Wireless... what your talking about doing is internet connection sharing and its a pain in the ass to setup :P (sometimes it just works... other times it does not) i dont understand how hes forced to use ethernet.

the problem is i have tried hooking up with a usb cable to my wireless G adapter, but the computer will not function unless it is hardwired through the network/ethernet port.
Which is why i was thinking of the two laptop idea as it is the only way of being able to get internet, since this work laptop lacks a wireless card, and won't connect via USB.

well its simple.... connect the two laptops with a cross-over cable and share the internet connection on the second laptop. the better option of course is to buy a repeater :P

When you say cross over cable do you mean a cat5e cable, and just plugging the two together, and then under wireless connection hit share my internet connection?

You need a nanostation m, or m loco, set to wireless client bridge.
