So I hear all about AS5 and how good it is and how "lapping" your heatsink helps. I've read reports as high as a 10c reduction. So I put it to my own test. I set aside my good old white paste I've been using for years and bought some AS5. I bought a 3/8" piece of glass to tape the sandpaper too and started sanding (yes, sanding, NOT lapping) the heatsink with 400 grit untill I saw that the entire surface had been scuffed. then I switched over to 1500 grit and sanded some more. 15 minutes later and a quick 1 min polish with my favorite metal polish and these are my results.

Test:
100% load (prime95 x2)
Case fully assembled.

Without sanding/polishing with white paste after 20 min = 63c
Fully resurfaced and polished with AS5 after 20 min = 63c

That said, I'm looking into a better cooler that may do a better job of "wicking" the heat away with heatpipes. Keep them short and plentiful. Did someone say Scythe? Next time I'm not wasting my time "lapping" anything.

I plan on putting it in my old 550 box. It needs it. 550 3.4@4 on a stock cooler? I'm on borrowed time.

In all fairness, it takes a few days and a few full heat cycles for the AS5 to fully cure. It doesn't show its true potential until then.

That actually is true, but it is only worth a few degrees at most. You might see the load temp drop to 60C after it sets up, but nothing amazing.

Just to update I wanted to let the cpu stay loaded for a few hours so I used a utility that came with the Intel tools that does 2d-3d-memory-cpu-bla bla bla, benchmarks all at the same time to get everything hot inside the case. The CPU topped out 66c. I have pretty good case ventilation but apperently it got 3deg warmer. I guess that's not too bad vs. the 63c CPU load test alone.

Big typhoon looked impressive at first but afterwards when I saw how quickly the temps would rise it's clear the 6 skinny pipes are insufficient.

how many volts are you putting to it? that and room temps play a big role in air cooling

To my cpu? 1.4375v. I hope the hsf fan has 12v but I never actually measured it. I have a thermometer on my desk that always shows 70deg. The heat vent is on the other side of the room so no direct furnace air that might give me a 'false' reading when the heat kicks on. What I need to do is buy a thermal probe one of these days then I could actually take a reading on the hsf's contact plate vs. the fins and see how effective those pipes are.

Ok, just for a final update on this thread. I found a 120cfm 120mm fan. Yes 120cfm...it's a screamer. Pulls 650ma. It dropped my temp 1c. So airflow is not the limitation of the Big Typhoon. I was right. The problem is that it can't get the heat up the pipes to the fins for the air flow to even get to it. I could probably put those fins under water and it wouldn't help. So that's it. Infinity is on the way!

I aslo heard ppl putting Heatsinks on the base of the BT, ive been wanting to try it but mine works good I lapped mine but didnt do as a good as job as you

Did you clean the BT with some Alcohol 90%+ before putting it on ?

I cleaned the surface of the BT and the CPU with brake cleaner and a towel. e6600 1.4625v 3500mhz 12v to the stock BT fan. I also tried my coolmaster fan which moves more air and the results were the same as the BT fan. I don't have the specs on the CM fan but also 12v. Room ambiant is 20c. Test done with 2 instances of prime95 each instance has dedicated core afinity.

I had mentioned trying that and I believe you would get better results. My testing leans toward the heatpipes themselfs not conducting the heat to the cooling fins. It's just too few of too skinny a pipe traveling too far. I can actually feel the difference with my hand at the base of the BT vs. the pipes near the top. The base is hot and the fins are cold. Heatsink fins should at least be warm.

I'm tempted to try a TT blue orb 2 just because Radioshack has it in stock here and I can return it. Just so I have -some- sample to compair it too.

I get about the same in the 60's but im useing TAT with 100% on both cores

cuz I aslo got some Ceramique from AS I hear it better then AS5, but it takes longer to cure, I have'nt put any on yet, but I was going to use it on my card then I read some reviews and some say its was better the AS5 for the CPU

Don't bother. Thermal compound isn't as important as they say. A few deg <5 at best. Also the BT just cant do any better. Contact with the CPU isn't the bottleneck.

its the room temps cuz ive had it 1.7V-Core but it read 1.63V at 27-25C on idle and it was snowing outside had the my fan blowing cold air in the case

but your going to need water cooling if you want better temps

I just grabbed a TT Blue Orb II for my p5w dh/e6400 build from Radio Shack

Installing xp64 right now so no Load tests yet but 13C idle for the last 2 hours whilst fiddling w/ the bios ad nauseum

barely fit over the funky heatpipe apparatus, had to use some spacers.

It's very quiet

room temp is ~60F but the case is wide open while I set everything up. Oddly enough the MB temp was 20C while the CPU was at 13C
