Microsoft Increases Windows Vista & 7 Consumer Support to Ten Years
Redmond-based software giant Microsoft Corp. has recently updated its support policy for both Windows Vista and Windows 7 and will be offering extended support to the consumer versions of the two operating systems.
Previously, Microsoft provided 5 years worth of 'mainstream support' for consumers while only businesses got an extra 5 years of extended support. Now, all Windows users will be able to get security updates for 10 years after the operating system's release. As a result of the policy change, Windows Vista's consumer support was extended to April 11th, 2017. Windows 7 support will end on January 14, 2020. ![]() Source: ZDNet |

That's great. I really don't like the direction that Microsoft is taking with the Metro interface (dumbed down and locked down) so it's good to know that I won't be forced to upgrade any time soon.
Judging by the small amount of users using the preview version of W8 compared to the preview version of W7, it looks like it might be another Vista and just get ignored, except on tablets, perhaps. Microsoft may yet backtrack on some of this stuff, if we're lucky.

Hm strange and it happens in time when everyone moans that XP is too old. Now I see that 7 will also linger for that long. I wonder how many service packs will 7 get.

Good to know they aren't EOL'ing Windows 7 that quick. Because I doubt allot of us are gonna switch over the Windows 8 when it hits the shelves.

EOL'ing, that's why I love English :-P
Ok. But imagine that W8 does deeply change performance when you have a SSD... or some other feature you REEEEALYYYYYYY need

How can you prefer Vista over 7? that's a step backwards imo
I really wish MS would take a leaf out of Apple's book when it comes to their OS and make it available as a download for £20- £30 then people wouldn't be so bothered about upgrading every 2 years or so. at £70+ just for an OEM copy and £100+ for retail it's absurd you should have to pay that every 2 years, no doubt I'll still move to Win8 anyway and just get myself an MSDN key regardless

look at this another way. on average ppl use windows for 2,5 years. 100 / 30 = 3,3pounds/monthly

THIS. I'm disliking 7 the more I use it. If only Vista didn't have a few niggling little issues only *I* seem to get...

XP -> skipped Vista -> W7 -> Skipping W8
Nice; though for me this is just the cherry on top of the cake which I get to consume during the lifetime of Windows (Metro) 8

too bad that in reality windows 7 is enhanced version of vista. i almost see no difference between vista and 7 except for 7 being 10% faster than vista and its support of newer technologies

I'm on vista and service packs and several updates just made it very solid for my tasks. I have triple boot with 7 and XP and I run vista as default.

Other reason to go W8: finally the Queen's Own language out of the box. For the educated few
