Windows 8 Launches in October, x86 and ARM Simultaneously
We know from a slightly older article, that the first variants of Windows will be released to market some time in Q4-2012. A new report by Bloomberg pin-points that to October, exactly 3 years after the market-launch of Windows 7. Further, Microsoft should launch Windows 8 for both x86 and ARM machine architectures around the same time, in what could be a breather for tablet and low-cost netbook designers. Despite that, there are fewer ARM devices running Windows 8, which will launch around that time, than x86 notebooks/PCs. With an October 2012 launch Microsoft should be able to target shoppers in the crucial winter shopping season, in mature markets, according to Bloomberg Analysts.

they are launching this OS too early I feel, no major testing or input has occurred for it to be deemed ready for market. Windows 7 definitly felt like a ready out of the box product

Guess in October I'll finally get around to upgrading to 7!
Vista ftw!

Windows 8 is going to flop like Vista sorta did but hopefully a lot worse than ME.

Vista was only a flop in termes of sales as they didn't sell much of it. Technology wise Vista was pretty good. win7 is a polished version of vista(win7 and vista use the same kernel)

Windows 8 will be really nice when it comes to tablets and phones. For desktops im not to fond of it but I will get it. Windows 8 won't flop like Vista though either. It may not be adopted early on, but after a year or 2 it will similar to from xp to vista. Its also nice that Microsoft wants to keep baically the same UI across all platforms to make it simple and streamlined for all users.

Next up: the memory footprint for the kernel. Like the System process, memory footprint tends to vary widely from version to version, with successive releases showing an ever-expanding kernel working set. Based on the thread count values I observed in my previous example, I anticipated that the working set would be similar to Vista's. And in keeping with my initial suspicions, Windows 7's System process indeed consumed a similar amount of memory (3.5MB to 4.5MB). So far, the new OS was looking a lot like Vista. In fact, the kernel in each major new version of the Windows OS has spawned a different, typically higher number of threads. So when I examined Windows 7 and found a nearly identical thread count (97 to 100) for the System process, I knew right away that I was dealing with a minor point-type of release, as opposed to a major update or rewrite.

Windows 8 is just Windows 7 with metro....I will use it when it comes out ,But not as a main OS rig(win7 does me fine with games an daily use) more for benching DX11.1-12 Or just testing,If you ask why would I spend $$$ on it ,I will not spend one cent... get it for nothing off TechNet.

With the overwhelming negative reaction from people who care enough to try consumer preview, Windows 8 (if it's released in its present form) is sure going to be Vista 2.0, or even worse.

I can't stand the logo. The window is pointing the wrong way. Started out as a minor annoyance but now I need a "fix" every time I see it

Apple at least has it right. A tablet OS for a tablet and a desktop OS for the Desktop. If you want tablet functions and features they are there but when you need them but they are out of the way.
Microsoft doesn't understand the tablet market. Never have - Never will. In the past they have always simply tried to cram full Windows onto tablets and its failed for them everytime. So this time they just cripple the desktop OS and force everybody to use their 'me too!' interface.. I want to call it 'ME 2.0' or the 'Hipster OS' as that what it feels like. Fake glasses on some fake person trying to be something they obviously are not. I have had all the versions of windows all the way back to 2.0. This is the first one I am not looking forward to and I'll try to skip. Unless.. Allow me to NOT boot into metro and put the damn start button back. Then... maaaaaaybe.... and YES the logo looks better facing to the right. Last edited by rob49152; Mar 21, 2012 at 11:52 AM. |

So in October, Windows will die... Poor Windows 7. What did you do to deserve such a terrible successor?

I doubt I will ever had Windows 8 unless there is something they release for it that I cannot game without. Windows 7 has been the OS of choice for a while now and will continue being. I know company's like change and creating new features but NEW is not always better. From windows 95 til windows 7, the taskbar/start has been the main feature that everyone is familiar with doing.

I will be switching my main machine to it on release, probably the others closely there after. I'll just disable Metro.

People have their reasons for not liking Vista (both real and imagined).
The vast majority of computers are mass produced OEM not home built. OS upgrades are likely a smaller subset of OS sales. New computers (and now some ARM tablets too) will be sold with Windows 8 even if there is a step down program. So Windows 8 basically already has a level of built in success,…if sales is how you measure success. I’ll certainly run Windows 8 but I’ll be doing so through TechNet. I have an Asus Eee Slate EP121 Windows 7 PC tablet (Core i5). As much as I like Windows 7, I don’t consider it to be well suited for a tablet so I’m looking forward to the upgrade there. In a lot of cases this is simply an issue of preference. If someone doesn’t like it and doesn’t want anything to do with it that’s fine but it doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with the OS. Oh and I dont care which way the logo goes,....6 of one, half a dozen of the other,....IMO. |

i see no need until i have hardware that supports the few features win 8 has i will actually use, and i don't see myself upgrading hardware for another year at least. still, i guess it will be within a few months of release.
if i can ask, what does it offer to make it worthy of a release day upgrade on your main machine? especially if you are disabling metro?
