SLI gtx 580 or wait until August for new kepler v2

Hi all,

Just wondering your thoughts on whether I should buy a second Gigabyte GTX 580 super OC or should I wait until the uber awesome kepler in august.

I can pick up a 580 SOC for $499 and for australia that is a fantastic price (usually ~$570ish). I am thinking of getting a second 580 because I am only running 1920X1200 and only using the second monitor for when I use AutoCAD for uni. Also I figure now is the time to buy because prices have really REALLY dropped recently and thought they may run out of stock soon.

Cheers

The 680 is real nice! What is the price of those in your area?

do not upgrade to 580 at all, ever IMAO
a sli gtx580 uses 70watts!!! at idle... the gtx580 is old news... get the 680!... or wait a year for the faster card... or go with the 7970 with it's zero-core idle mode... so if you leave your computer on all the time get the 7950 or 7970, or get the 680, and use sleep mode.

around $700AUD :/ where as i can get the gigabyte 580 SOC like my current one for $499. I know OCed my card performs similarly to 7950 OC at my resolution in most games.

Keep the suggestions coming people

I agree with the statement above. it normally would be best to wait 2 to 3 gens before upgrading to a new model card or set of per set, and Honestly I wouldnt wait for Kepler v2 or the AMD refresh either.

haha well I think I may go the 580 sli route seeing that its $500 (for SOC) versus $700 for reference 680. I'm wanting to upgrade because I was planning to upgrade my car's spark plugs but apparently they are already of a high quality (BOSCH platinum) so not much point.

Bosch isnt very high end at all. Look at Iridium or NGK

yeh but the NGK ones i found on the citroen racing boutique, are 120euro + shipping and it isn't an easy removal in my engine unfortunately. The head of service guy told be to hold off a little bit and try a couple of other things first before attacking the engine. So I am getting a header back supersprint exhaust installed on monday morning (yes it includes the high flow cat). Also I thought the same thing as you about the bosch plat. plugs but yeh i was recommended against it. Oh and I never said they were high-end only that they were of high-quality. Also I am a uni student so I don't have a steady flow of income haha.... textbooks >=(

Here's the link for them if you're interested. http://boutique.citroenracing.com/pr...d_product=3650

Iridium is in same Family as Platinum but is a Harder Metal, thus smaller electrode inside the plug thus less voltage required to fire thus less strain on the ignition system overall- so in a sense it creates durability.

I have the truck i got due to ease of repair when it needs it, only thing that majorly will change is the ignition system will be fully electronic in a year since its one of the last of the Distributor Ran GM Engines.

Take ignition off 2008 Model LU3 Vortec 4.3L and put on 2003 Model LU3 Vortec 4.3L

Another 580 is the obvious choice. I really don't think any high-end Kepler will be out until the 8000 series from AMD.

Yeh I was reading up on the DS3 forums about the smaller electrode bonus and another advantage was a more responsive engine apparantly.

Yeh and I doubt they will be as powerful as two SOC 580's too. Thanks, I had a feeling the rumour of the new kepler was fake seeing that the gtx 600 series would have only been out for a few months.

I Also Heard that directly sending a ground wire from the throttlebody to the chassis or engine block does inprove throttle response from a deadstop. Not 100% on that one though

id wait atleast 2 gens before upgrading the 580, so in a sense that would be the Radeon 9K HD series

Nah, for single card solutions when GK110 will be out and the 8000 series, the 580 will be history. For now and probably all this year it still holds its own. SLI is a different story.

Sell your current 580 to help justify the cost of the 680. Wait a month or 2 of saving and then score a 2nd one.

EDIT:

Alternatively, sell your current 580, purchase a 570 and a 7800 series. SLI the 570's in your main rig. Nevermind not worth it

if australia gets most of it is power via nuclear or you are using "green power" then it is moot point... just sayin'

so dont worry about it.

500s are far better than the 400 series in power use.

hmm i'll look into that ground wire idea. And yes thats what I was thinking with the 580, to sli them and then wait another year before upgrading. I'm a bit of a GPU whore these days haha. Usually get between 8-14months on my gpu's.
Also the 570 in my miniLAN rig was in my main system and i thought about sli 570's or upgrade to 580 but chose 580, just because i didn't have to buy ANOTHER gpu for my mini rig.

thanks again for everyone who has contributed I think I will SLI my 580 SOC, it just might take some time as i am a bit low on funds haha. I would wait but, computers just keep getting better and better and sooner or later you have to jump aboard and buy something. Otherwise you would be waiting forever!
