It definitely meets my expectations as far as performance goes. I was expecting the 680 to be the GK110 though, so it didn't meet my expectations as far as what I thought that it was going to be.

It's still one hell of a card though, and unless AMD comes up with a very nice price cut before Ivy releases, it will be going in my Ivy build.

It isn't a compelling upgrade on the performance side but with taking a look at the whole picture with power consumption then it makes the disappointing jump in performance a bit more justifiable.
I want GK110 and a 50-60% jump over the GTX 580 then I'll think about upgrading.

Clock for clock comparisons don't matter when one can reliably/is running a higher clock than the other.

And it certainly is possible that AMD has been holding back the truly good silicon for another card, HD4890 style. They knew nVidia would likely put out a killer GPU, so they could have held back the HD7970 cores that can reliably do 1GHz stock speeds to release a HD7990(or whatever) with those chips clocked at the stock 1GHz+.

Of course even nVidia sandbagged the GTX680, leaving themselves plenty of room to push the GK104 chip higher. Anyone else notice the extra power phase they omitted from the reference board, as well as the extra power connector pads? Pop on an extra power phase, move to an 8-pin+6-pin(or even 8-pin+6-pin+6pin) to up the power limit, and push that chip even further!

I'm saying it's even better. Performance-wise I didn't really had expectations at all but the power consumption was a nice surprise.

I was speculating with a friend and I said to him I figured when the GK110(?) comes out the GTX 680 will fall in price to allow the big GK to hit the 500-600 pound or dollar mark. Given the die size of GK104 and everyones belief it's a "660" in disguise I think Nvidia have room to maneouvre.

Folk will say that NV will price it super high (700-800) but that would not be in their best commercial interest. Few cards sell at those price points, GK110 will be sold as the high end for the next series and priced accordingly as a single gpu. All my personal opinion mind.

I'll either get a price reduced 7970 or a 680 for now but I too figure I'm waiting on the Big Kepler.

Edit: Also, if nobody else has said this, I hope this stops lots of people bitching on about Fermi and it's toast making ability. It looks like GK has brought back the pre GTX 4xx series levels where Nvidia made quiet and efficient cards. Lots of folk (maybe too young) think NV have always made power hungry monsters. Hopefully this will shut them up? Now the HD 79xx series is the power hungry card with too high a price tag.

I'm in the belief that AMD and Nvidia like to talk to each other when it comes to releasing cards. GTX7XX series and HD8XXX series will release very close to one another and I'm going to go way out on a limb (sarcasm) and say that their next top end cards will be close in terms of performance again. Keep your friends close but your enemies closer kind of thing.

To me it's even better, despite the good performance increase over the 7970 it also managed to beat its value, very happy with the green teams move ATM 680 is on my list

AMD will also likely know the direction NV will take with GK110 (more compute focus, higher bandwidth etc) and Nvidia will see AMD trying to improve Compute with enhanced GCN. I think you're right about a close release for the next series. GK110 is delayed but is obviously coming and the Sea Islands (or whatever) from AMD is already well touted. Christmas time releases perhaps?

I take my hat off to NVidia, what they did in this architecture is simply amazing; can't even begin to fathom how powerful is/will be the GK100 GPU. BTW NVidia managed to deliver a Liver Blow to AMD's faux king with a higher midrange GPU... I think the did wisely in withholding the GK100 GPU until there's a worthy foe in the ring to take it head on.

hoped for more

the way they talked about this thing "unofficial sources" i was hoping for it to be 3 times faster than the 580 .... yeah unreal hopes but it would be nice to see performance surpass graphics needs.... if you could buy a 660ti for the same price as a 560ti and get 2-3 times the performance pc gaming would boom beyond consols again...imo but still.. as previously said hates off to nvidia the arch alone is amazing...

It's about where I expected it to be. The power draw and effeciency is better than I expected, though. And the price is a lot lower than I thought it would be. That is a nice plus.
Can't wait to see the GTX 660. Going more mid-range on my next graphics card purchase.

Also, I keep seeing people posting about gk100. Is that even coming out, or is it just an internet myth?

Are you sure about that? WHat im seeing is they trade blows almost even sometimes the 680 edges out more often. Thats also including 3 screen displays with huge resolutions.

Don't understand correctly what you say but I'll give you something about the GTX680 power over the Xbox 360 as said by Timothy Lottes creator fo the FXAA:

"TEX:ALU ratio and TEX perf for GTX 680 is awesome, 128 Mtex/ms. To put this in perspective for console developers, this is 16x the performance of the Xbox360."

Troll much?

Wizz reviews 16 games.
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/N...GTX_680/1.html

7970 wins 3 (by as little as a few % at most)
draws pretty much on 2
loses on 11. On some of those losses it's by double digit %.

Yup, they may well have a cozy duopoly or semi-duopoly, seems likely. One can infer it after a while from the way the products are launched, their relative performance and prices.

And the punters (thats' us) lose.

Still though, the 680 is a great card regardless of these issues. However, at 16% performance gain from my 580 they've not given me a compelling reason to upgrade, have they?
