AM3 cooler...quiet and cheap.

I need a decent cheap/quiet AM3 cpu cooler for my wife's office computer. It doesn't have to be a high end cooler, just slightly better than stock, with an emphasis on quiet and installation using the stock bracket.

It's Intel mount only. Still looking. I really want to keep this simple. Just slightly better than stock, quiet, and easy installation is my focus here.

LOL. That might be worth getting from Amazon. It's just hard thinking about some of the crap Logisys sells. Total crap. Though the reviews for the cooler look good.

I did check their threads. SP seems to not be offering many coolers right now. I don't think Cop does coolers. AnthlonX I'm not sure about. Maybe need to PM him.

Does it use the standard backplate? Ease of install on AM3? I'm taking a break from anything hardware related that I don't really have to do, so I'm looking for something I can just switch out in 10 minutes, with removing the motherboard or anything.

It uses the metal bracket under the MB all you do is remove the plastic retention piece and the 4 screws. The Metal bracket must be threaded all the way through.

I had to remove my psu and it took me like 10mins for the G950 Cooler. READ THE REVIEW HERE

It's not difficulty I'm worried about. Thing is, I'm taking a "vacation" from hardware for a few months, and I'm really looking at quick and almost no effort. I don't want to have to take out the motherboard. I'm only doing this right now because my wife is complaining of the noise from the stock cooler when she is working with clients.

I would PM them all, just in case they have something in their bag of tricks that they've been holding onto.

See with my installation my MB had the right BACKPLATE for the job so I just removed the plastic part of it and put together the new HSF and it is installed with 4 thimb screws. If you would like, I can send you MY AMD backplate that will make this process EASY.
I have the G950 installed right now set up as a passive HS with the metal AMD BP. My X2 240 is downclocked/undervolted to 2460MHz @ 1.13v. Folding it never reaches 40c with a-92mm exhaust fan. Both my ASUS and GIGABYTE do have the right BP, while the ASRock and ECS do not have the right one. YMMV I'll hook you up either way.

Logisys bought the company that makes these a couple of months ago so I don't think they have had time to screw them up yet- original company was DeepCool or something like that

Paul,

check these OEM heatpipe AMD coolers from Computergeeks.com. It says free shipping too.

what is the CPU you are going to use it for? 125w+?

Hey Paul,

I can send you my stock heatpipe cooler from my FX-6200 for as long as you need it (pic)

http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/sh...ostcount=19889

You can probably put a 92 mm fan on top if too noisy

PM if interested

Thanks. That's what I'm currently using. My wife says it's still too noisy for her. She's a shrink, and wants her office totally quiet while with clients.

I put the Xigmatek Gaia in a build and it was absolutely silent- I believe the groove is still in the top to use the older Xig AMD clip- good cooler for $30... Otherwise, an AC Freezer 7 rev2 is easy to install on the stock mounting and runs very cool and quiet, using one in one of my crunchers (installs in 2-3 minutes)

*** EDIT- no groove on the Gaia for the old style clip ***

With all due respect, for that type of quiet, you get a quiet HSF and do whatever it takes to install it. Are you sure it's the HSF that is speeding up? Could be a case fan or PSU. Maybe you need a quiet case?
