Well... as magically as it fixed itself, it suddenly unfixed itself.
The fan suddenly shot up while on the windows desktop and has been full blast ever since. So should I bake it for real lol? |

Is RMA an option?

Sily thought but have you pulled the card out and cleaned out the HSF and applied fresh TIM? Sometime's i have even found simply pulling the card and reinstalling does the trick, for what ever reason i have no idea

Is it reporting that it's really hot again too?

![]() Jokes aside tho I didn't see anyone bring up one of the more obvious possibilities - that the thermal compound has dried up / failed and that the gpu really was reaching over 100 degrees. I'm not saying this IS the fact here but I have seen it before, buddy brought me his pc said the fans where going crazy - so I pulled off the gpu cooler and the thermal compound was all dust...

XFX 5870 Fan going 100%
I was following this thread cause I just got an XFX 587XZNV and the fan started to go crazy as well with >1000C temp and maxed out at 127C in CCC. Running Furmark fixed it for now and everything is back to normal however it did it a couple of times already even though I applied new Arctic Cooling MX-2 on the GPU and did a good cleanup.
Nonetheless, I bet it'll do it again sooner or later. The good news is the card is still under warranty so I can send it to RMA if needed but still, if I can avoid it.... I'll keep this thread posted. Thanks for the tip! |

Of course it wasn't "real" 1000C
Just the sensors which for some reasons were out of whack...
Nonetheless, Furmark "fixed" the sensors, maybe they need to reach a certain level of temp in order to reset? Also MX-2 vs MX-4...doesn't really matter, just got a stock load of MX-2 so I might as well use it ![]() The point was that even with a cleaned card, the issue occurs randomly. Either way the card is under lifetime warranty so if it can't be fixed I'll RMA but it's a pain...

Mx2-4
That's why I don't spread MX2-4 on my toasts...
![]() I usually put a pea size drop in the middle of the GPU/CPU and it seems to work well for me. On this particular card I get 45C idle and 71C average load. Not bad with one fan.

those are some pretty decent temps as far as stock cooling goes. my 6970s used to idle at 53'c till i got a bigger case for them with more breathing room. my load temps are higher by a decent margin though as XFX's warranty wont allow me to remove the stockcooler to replace the thermal paste.
so depending on ambient temps my GPUs sometimes run close to 90'c with the standard automated profile, otherwise i just manually set the fans to run at around 35-40% where they are clearly audible but easily get buried in the sounds of explosions while play BF3

XFX warranty
I guess it's not bad temp. Fan is ok up to 60% then becomes loud (4400+ RPM at 100%). Changing the TIM dropped the temp by 12 degrees or so at full load.
Odd for your card that changing the thermal paste would void the warranty. I've read threads on this and the XFX guy was saying that you can do whatever to the card as far as you don't damage it physically and return it for RMA in its integrity. People were worried about water cooling or third part heatsink and because you need to clean/re-apply the thermal paste it seems like it didn't matter for the warranty. Now, if you break a seal in order to open your card to reach the GPU, it's another story. You should contact them and ask for more information.
