Microsoft Ends Mainstream Support for Vista Today, End of Support for XP in 2014

Microsoft Windows Vista is out of its "mainstream support" from today. Users will continue to have free access to security updates, but those without a commercial support contract will have to pay for bug fixes or other patches. This phase between end of mainstream support and end of support is called "extended support", and for Vista, it will last till 2017. The decade-old Windows XP, on the other hand, will see Microsoft pull the plug on its support no later than in 2014.

Well that clinches it. No more free bug fixes for Vista?
I'm going back to Windows ME.

Good riddance was a merely a "test OS" for Win 7 as far as I was concerned anyway.

@TMM : No. But I must admit the only problem I ever had when I was on Vista was pathetically slow transfers to USB devices.

Not suprising that Vista support will be discontinued long before XP.

IMO I know a load of people who werent satisfied with W7 starter on their netbooks do a wipe and going back to XP Pro due to the minimal amount of resources it takes up and XP Pro being a fully fledged 'full fat' OS compared to W7 Starter.

so this is good news in a small sense.

If you actually read the chart, you can see that "mainstream support" for XP has ended long before Vista.

Not true. MAINSTREAM support is ended. That happened to XP back in 2009. EXTENDED support for Vista lasts until 2017.

Yes, it's called Windows 8 LOLz

Hard to fathom any operating system (XP) still mainstrem for 1.5 decades. Then again, it's not the same XP that was originally released.

Long before? Nonsense. Every OS gets 3 years full support and 3 years extended support. And thats it. The reason why WinXP lasted so long is the gab between old gen and new gen.
Vista was to WinXP the same thing as was WinXP to the Win9x. Despite allt he complaining and whining of users. Sister is still running Vista on her laptop and its working perfectly fine. I also had Vista on my main system and it's perfectly ok.

I have to say that I like Vista 64, once I tweaked it. I have found it to be better than XP. I only paid $0 for it so MS gave it to me, I wish I could get my next OS like that!

Meh, personally I love vista and hate windows 7. Looks like I ll hate windows 8 even more cuz the preview is simply retarded. W7 has so many dumb features. Granted they improved on many things in vista, but vista runs perfectly fine for me. Even after 3 mobo swaps(diff hardware set each time), and an inplace upgrade from XP. The machine runs like a dream.
After several thousand updates to Vista, its actually a nice OS. W7 is retarded in comparison.
Its too bad they didnt / wont add XOP n AVX support to vista =(

I'm on Vista since it was released. People complaining have never tried vista with SP2. It works like a charm. Also, reinstalled once in 2008 and never had to reinstall.

I can't use 7 for compatibility reasons with drivers. (Damn video capture cards!) But I have it installed. All in all 7 has a faster startup.

I wish they made OSX for the PC platform and didn't lock it to Apple hardware. Some things I really enjoy on my mac better then win7. Honestly some things just work better IMO.

yea. the reason i said that is because those other 3 operating systems are the alternative to microsoft. lots of people complain, even more do nothing about it.

In all honesty the other alternatives are a lot more complicated IMO. I love OSX on Apple hardware and if they brought it over to the PC I would jump in a second. However Unix/Linux has to sharp of a learning curb for me. I mean you REALLY have to be into that stuff to make it work right.
