Graphics Card Upgrade: Need advice pls

Hi, I have a single radeon 6950 2gb... I used to have 2x in CF but I sold one...

I was goin to buy another radeon 6950 to do crossfire again... But I'm thinking I should sell my remaining radeon 6950 2gb and get myself the 7970 or 7950... or a NVIDIA card...

Basically, I'll get 230$ if I sell my remaning 2gb 6950 card... and it would cost me just a little more than that to buy another 6950...

So I'm thinking I should sell the 6950 and get an upgrade... What do you guys think, what's the best 400 - 550$ card's worth I could get?

6950 CF or other solution ???

$230 for a used 6950 is real keen, there's ones here in Australia, ripoff capital of the world, going for $160 on ebay.

i would say sell it and get a 7970. also, if you wait a couple of weeks, you might be able to enjoy the rumoured $60 price cuts.

You already had CF, why did you sell? The 7970 is basically the same as this CF minus the problems (if you experience any) of crossfire. GTX680 is slightly faster than the 7970. So, more or less you are in the same boat as performance and money goes. No single card below these cards can offer you the 6950 CF performance. I'd personally sell the other 6950 and go with the 7970 or the GTX680 whichever is cheaper in your area.

+1 ^ The 7970 or 680 would use less power the the CF 6950

yeah but I've heard that in certain situations, 6950 cf beat 7970... in BF3 for instance, 6950 cf has higher frames (because of great scaling) than 7970 oc...

I don't mind the power consumption... what I want is absolute solid 60FPS...

680 or 7950. 7950 can be really close to the 7970 but $100 cheaper and well u cant beat a 680. If u can hold off amd r gona drop their prices on the 7xxx cards which should make things more interesting.

@crap daddy, I just saw your link... and I went to check some benchmarks, and in many situations the 6950 2gb CF beats the 7970 and 680 by 10-13 fps avg...

hmmm... complicated situation

I published a guitar chord book, and needed to raise some money, so I sold my 2nd xbox 360 and one of my cards... I figured I'd sell enough books eventually to buy the card again at a cheaper price...

which is why I've been askin for advice... now that I can afford a new card...

40fps on 7970 will be smoother than 60fps in 6950CF. I need 70fps or more to be smoother with my CF setup in BF3.

i'm talking about apparent FPS vs measured FPS.

with a single card, apparent FPS ~ measured FPS.
with multiple cards, apparent FPS < measured FPS. how much deficit there is, depends on the card, the game (and settings) and the drivers.

with CF disabled, 35-40fps is very smooth with a 6950. when CF enabled, if it drops below 60fps, it is VERY stuttery.

for example, cannot snipe with anything below 70fps on CF setup. but in a single card, 40fps is enough for easy sniping.

it differs from driver to driver as well. i have lowered the texture quality a tad and disabled MSAA so that the FPS doesn't go below 70fps in MP.

You ever think unlocking that card might of caused your frames to not work right?

I'm compelled to agree with him here. There's no reason it would be choppier with higher fps, that literally doesn't make sense. Are you possibly referring to Micro-Stutter? If so try disabling HyperThreading on your 2600k.

im saying not 100% of 6950s unlock to the full fleged 6970

And if the machine is not kept maintained it will screw up

590 = SLI 2x 570s and 6990 = CFX 2x 6970s, so they will be only a tad faster than CFX 6950s but with the same CF issues. Personally I'd get another 6950. But that's me.

I had a single 6950 2gb, and i just bought 2 x 7950's, i got each one for 399$ CAN.

In xfire: these cards are unreal, i see anywhere from 60-99% scaling in games/benchmarks, including unigine.
My fps is absolutely unreal in bf3 .... i play @ 5760x1080 ultra, 2 x msaa, SSAO lighting and my min is 55~, average 70.

with 1080p single monitor gaming, ultra, 4 x msaa , HBAO lighting, max absolute everything and min goes down to like 115 fps, 125~ average. I have them overclocked @ stock voltage 925/1400 each card. i simply LOVE these cards.

In my single card testing, 1080p single monitor testing with max 4xmsaa, HBAO, ultra was around 75 fps. average around 85 ish. System is an i5 2500k @ 4500mhz, 1866 8gb ram, for comparison.

grab a single card either 680 or 7970,

i went from 5850 xfire to 6970 xfire to 6950 xfire to now single 7970, and i can tell you right now games feel a bit better then they did with the xfire setup not a huge issue but its noticeable if you look for it, with an overclock to 1070 on the core i equal the same performance as my 6950 Twin Frozr III PE / OC cards in crossfire in the majority of benchmarks,

Single card, lower power draw, no xfire headaches or waiting for support, with a good aftermarket cooler and a bit of luck even higher overclocks can be attained.
