Looking for older games that can run on Windows XP

Ok, so it's for an 11 year old kid. His only system is a laptop, he likes aeroplane games.
The laptop is using Windows XP.
Problem is, I don't know any titles. I'm giving him my old Thrustmaster Afterburner II joystick.

But are there any other games, can be side scrollers or shoot 'em up (just guessing)?

Many thanks! Think it can run on an IBM Thinkpad T61? It's OS is WinXP, 2Gb RAM.
The model is 7660-RPG.

Falcon 4.0 was pretty decent, and had an active modding community.

Umm, I'll have to go digging thru some boxes to find my old Flight Sims.

There's also some free open source flight sims, can't remember the names but you can try to google them.

For an 11 year old?

F22 Lightning 3 is on Steam, I used to love it when I was at that age. It's not exactly a full fledged simulator but it's much much more than arcade.

Edit: I should point out it's from 1999

It has integrated graphics, you'll be lucky to get anything running on it. Flight sims have always been notorious for having heavy graphics.

MS Flight Simulator up to 2002/2004 should work on that PC.

MS CFS 1 & 2 should work fine. 3 i don't know, but i don't recommend it because IL2 is better IMO.

IL2 Sturmovik (the old one, not the new one which i don't like it) should run, not with all graphics maxed though, but if combat sims is what he likes, IMO this is one of the best. There are lots of mods for it too. You can get it on Steam, the one you should look for is IL2 Sturmovik: 1946, this one has all the expansions.

if you have a copy of Battlefield 2, let him play it with 64p bots mod and he'll can just pilot the helis/jets there.

If your son likes space exploration. I would suggest trying out Orbiter, but the game is a little technical so he might not understand it.

however if he likes Sci-Fi Space Exploration, I suggest that he try X-series games. specifically X and X2. X3 is pretty much newer and might not run on the laptop. The games'(x-series) has great atmosphere. You will feel that you're really a space explorer/pilot especially if you have a joystick.

What type of onboard video does the T61 have? I have a T60 with ATI X1400 IGP and it will do OK on source games.

It isn't a flight game, but it is awesome. I suggest finding the Codemasters game Blade Of Darkness. It is probably the best hack and slash game you will find from that era. Tons of weapons, blood, dismemberment, decapations, tons of fun!

It was called Severance: Blade Of Darkness out side the USA.

The X series, especially X2: The Threat. The game has a pretty steep learning curve but once you got it figured out, it is a lot of fun.

Maybe Freelancer too--that one is easier.
