If it freezes, it may mean that you either need more voltage to boot with the extra cores, or that at least one of the cores are bad. That's exactly what happened with one of my 960T's. there is simply no promises when it comes to unlocking cores.

If it freezes then its safe to say you have a dud chip. Continue using it as a quad or if you really need a 6 core, get a 1055T

Not sure it has anything to do with the chipset, since yours does have the ability to unlock. My 990FX board would not unlock one of my 960T's, and would freeze everytime I tried to unlock it.

What you could do is RMA your current 960T to AMD and get another to see if it will unlock. Even though this is immoral, its well worth a shot.

I've had two of these chips, one unlocked both cores successfully with just a minor bump in voltage and the other only unlocked 1 core successfully. It is just the luck of the draw with unlocking.

Try backing down to stock clocks and start bumping up the voltage. It could be that the extra two cores aren't good clockers.

My 960T unlocked on 3 different generations of boards (790GX, 890X, 990X) and would post on the BIOS as a 6 core but would instantly blue screen just after the "starting windows" screen

*note- I got the blue screen on with Windows 7 and XP

Does your BIOS revision support the 6 core PII's?

I believe Jr Racing Fan noted a success rate to unlock around the 30% or so and I read somewhere in another thread that the cores were locked out due to issues with the memory controller?

As other have said, it's the luck of the draw- it's still a great chip though and overclocks very well

You are correct. Heard they are ~35% success rate, and of those most had to be downclocked.

@Newtekie

Congrats man on the good unlocks!

@Newtekie

Congrats man on the good unlocks!
I tried just about everything in the trick bag to unlock mine, up volts, down clocks, 5 cores, 6 cores, dropping memory timing, etc... I gave in after a couple of days.

The X2 555 I have was super easy- a couple of BIOS clicks and Bam! 4 cores 100% stable
I'm convinced my 555 was a dual core due to market demand/price point issues

You have CPU unlock disabled on your BIOS screen shot- try enabling that and leaving core control in auto. After you start to post then go back into setup and get the screenshot... you should see 6 cores when you switch core control to manual.

You have probably done this already but just took a screenshot of the 4 core setup

Other than that, it sounds like you may be in the majority with the rest of us

Hey Huskie, I also have this cpu and also trying to unlock the other 2 cores. Your second screenshot is just like mine. It just says Amd 6 core processor and it freezes. My question is how do you get to the bios like that? My keyboard and mouse don't light up at all everytime i do that and it takes me hours just to get to the bios again.
