Not bad, but for $199 you can have 5 (iirc) keys to every version of Windows with a Technet subscription. Just throwing that out there if 3 isn't enough.

The $199 technet subscription only gives you 2 keys. But yeah, definitely a better deal since you also get all the server OSes, and Office 2003, 2007, and 2010, as well as Vista keys.

my whole issue with the system is why do I need to pay for a key for every machine it used to be you would buy a copy of windows and then install it on whatever you want as many times as you want
charging for extra installs does two things
1. pads Microsoft pocket with money
2. drives software downloading up

Legally, it has never been that way. You buy one copy of Windows, it goes on one computer. They've just started enforcing it.

And you have to pay for a key for every machine because if you didn't, then they would sell one copy of Windows and that is it, and everyone would just use the same key. They'd go bankrupt.

According to the Win 98 SE EULA:

Quote:
1. GRANT OF LICENSE. This EULA grants you the following rights:

Software Installation and Use. You may only install and use one copy of
the SOFTWARE PRODUCT on the COMPUTER.
Buying one copy of Windows per PC is not a big deal, we spend thousands on hardware but complain about spending $100 on the software to make it run? And the software lasts longer than most hardware, at least you can keep re-using they copy of Windows on each new PC as long as you take it off the old PC first, most of us don't re-use hardware.

Ahhh, so the $299 version is the one for 5 keys?

Last time I bought Technet I got 10 keys. If I renew that, will I be grandfathered in? Or should I just buy a new one?

I'm not sure, I thought the $299 version still gave 10. But yes you should be grandfathered in if you renew, as long as your subscription hasn't expired. Once it has expired I believe the new terms of the new subscription apply when you renew.

Though I don't renew, I just create new accounts so I can get a new set of keys.

Actually, it says exactly that in the EULA, that wording is in the 98 EULA.

I heard it's down to 5 keys. Not sure though.

I think I'm gonna go for a new one when 8 releases. I'll stick to buying it when something new comes out.

Yeah, Win8 is what I'm waiting for as well. My subscription just expired a few days ago.

If they did it your way, you could buy 1 and install it on 20 computers. The are a company out to make a profit, and that's not very profitable.

You want the ability to install on unlimited machines? Use Linux. Nobody is forcing you to agree to MS's terms.

No, it really is quite that simple. You don't like the terms? Don't use it. It really doesn't get any more simple than that. Nobody is forcing you to use Windows.
