Neither will do it. If you want to play BF3 on ultra settings you'll need a 7970, GTX670 or GTX680.

You're talking about dual GPU's Yes, at 1920x1200 I could run on Ultra settings with two 6950's. I see nothing in the OP talking about dual GPU's.

If I can just about run BF3 on Ultra with a 460, you can run on those others. Just be sure you have about 2GB VRAM.

Yes true, but I didnt see nothing about 1920x1200!

And why you only mentioned those 3 Gpu´s as the only capable?
There are plenty of them capable....

You can play with a 7850 BF3 on ULTRA at 1920x1200 (OPs monitor), the only problem is that you'll get probably around 30FPS. Decent play at that res ULTRA preset are the three GPUs listed by erocker.

Thanks for clarifying. In SP, FPS is better. Most reviews unfortunately use SP.

As erocker knows, I play MP mostly so I need a good set up. I currently run a Gigabyte 5850 with a 750W PSU. I can run on high but with the new expansions I want the "experience" But unless someone buys my CPU and Motherboard combo, I cant go above 300.

Get a GTX 670. Just wait a couple more weeks and save another hundred bucks. It's, in my opinion your best upgrade path and the best bang for your buck.

Checking the OPs system specs you can see he owns a 1900x1200 monitor.

To run BF3 on ultra over 50-60 fps at 1900x1200, the only choices are the 670/680 or the 7970. Dropping the details to high you can get away with a 560ti/570/7850/7870 but Ultra is out of the question.

Your need is a perfect example of how wrong the current state of GPU market is right now.
The only card worth purchasing under 300$ right now is the 7850 but it's a card that offers less that 10% performance increase above last year's same price cards. If you want a reasonable jump in performance you have to go at the 400$ mark. The 670 is the best card to buy right now and in this generation. If you can afford then go for it. If you can squeeze a few dollars more there are 7870 at 320$ after rebates. That card overclocked can get you well above the 40FPS mark with ULTRA preset but you can set only 2MSAA and push more.

Right, it's a mobile version.. Didn't catch that. You must have an amazing chip there then. Should he buy a laptop?

I think it depends on if you're turning up AA/AF in the graphics drivers or not. Ultra detail with no AA/AF from the driver has little visual difference in a lot of scenarios Vs maxx everything that will make even the highest end of cards cry.

I've also noted that MP framerates are wildly different. Boo EA. I played through SP, since I was in kyrzygstan at the time and internet is nonexistant there.

I can play SP on ultra no problem on my 5850OC 1GB.

I have thought about crossfiring my 5850 but I dont know if that would allow me to hit Ultra with 4xMSAA 8xAblah blah.

Sometimes I think my settings are screwing me when I try to spot people in the terrain. Im trying to sell my 955BE +_ mobo for like 150 so maybe I can snag a the 670 or something. It has been several years since i last used NVidia. My last nvidia card was a 8600GS or 7600GS i forget. It was fine for CS:Source ^_^
My 5850 has done well so far till now of course. ^_^

Just checked again, playin on All Ultra preset, not tweaked as I first thought, with a slightly oc'ed GTX470, and specs as on the left here.

So recommending a 670 or higher is radically overkill. But nice of course... also for the economy...

Not sure if serious... (sorry for the interwebz speak.)

I know someone with the same card and connot do this. Then again you don't say what average FPS you're getting. Or if it's in SP or MP. I mean, sure. I can play games at 20fps if I have to too.

I agree here. I play on medium with 2xmsaa and all other crap turned off and still suck on maps like the B2K ones and a 560TI 2gb out performs a 470.

My opinion would be 670 if you can afford it or if not a 7870 2gb
