Dishonored

Dishonored, where you can see the debut trailer and gameplay trailer.

So, what caught my attention? Well one thing is Harvey Smith is involved, and another is this here quote from here:

Quote:
The game nimbly blends inspirations from a pantheon of modern classics: The oppressive atmosphere and paranoid politicking of BioShock, the graceful bloodletting of Assassin’s Creed, the murky morality of Deus Ex, the stealth and shadow of Thief. This is a game about skulking in dark places, eavesdropping on secret conversations, setting up the perfect ambush and beating a hasty retreat.
At first I hoped the Thief part would be bigger, but looking at the gameplay it looks like more combat and less stealth, but I seriously hope the levels are open and maybe not as obvious as in Deus Ex.

Am I excited? No, I'm far to cynical for that, but I like the look of it. Also, the guy who designed City 17 in Half-Life 2 is there somewhere, and that's a good sign. Could be good.

EDIT System specs!

Quote:
Minimum Spec:
OS: Windows Vista / Windows 7
Processor: 3.0 GHz dual core or better
Memory: 4 GB system RAM
Hard Disk Space: 9 GB
Video Card: DirectX 9 compatible with 512 MB video RAM or better (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 / ATI Radeon HD 5850)
Sound: Windows compatible sound card

Recommended Spec:
OS: Windows Vista / Windows 7
Processor: 2.4 GHz quad core or better
Memory: 4 GB system RAM
Hard Disk Space: 9 GB
Video Card: DirectX 9 compatible with 768 MB video RAM or better (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 / ATI Radeon HD 5850)
Sound: Windows compatible sound card
Seems a bit high.

Lots of games that encourage stealth also have a robust combat system so you can pick which way to play yourself. For example, Alpha Protocol, Splinter Cell, and Deus Ex can almost entirely be played completely hidden but in a lot of cases, if you want to start a fire fight you can, and win.

The trailers most likely showed more combat just because combat is what the press wants to see. They did the same with Splinter Cell: Blacklist.

I expected better looking graphics than that. Honestly, it's one of the worst uses of UE3 I've seen. Doesn't even look any better than The Saboteur.

The Saboteur uses the Odin engine.

Graphics aren't everything. In fact, the best games that are worth replaying over and over often have mediocre graphics. Gameplay is far more important.

Yeah I'm well aware The Saboteur uses Pandemic's Odin engine, and I've played through that game 3 or 4 times. I also agree that quality of gameplay should be the top priority. However at this stage in game evolution graphics look much better than this, and it IS part of the immersion. UE3 certainly isn't the best engine, but when someone makes such horrible use of it, it's obvious they didn't honor the nice art design with decent renderings. It's kinda like how RAGE had great art design, but horrible graphics except for some of the outdoor vistas.

Graphics and maps look great. But IMO the gameplay sucks. I just watched the videos.

STOP --------------------------- WAIT ---------------------------- BEND TIME ----------------------- WAIT ------------------- POSSESSION ----------------------------- WAIT -------------------------- PERFORM BULLET TIME KILL --------------------- WAIT --------------------- WATCH AS YOU GET HYDROCARBON EXPLOSION IN SLOWMO WHEN THROWING AN OBJECT LIKE A KNIFE OR RAZOR ------------------------ WAIT ---------------------- RAGDOLL DEATH SEQUENCE -------------------------- WAIT ------------------------ NOW BACK IN REAL-TIME CONTROL

Yawn.

That sequence might be OK once or twice in the game... or in a Hollywood movie once or twice. But for every freaking kill? It will really drag out the game. It will be as slow and as dull as one of those text based adventure games. You know "Go north" "look" "Pick up sword" "use sword" "inventory" "drop violin" etc.

Looks extremely boring, like playing a game with cheats. Couldn't get less stupid. And that blurry slomo is way too cliche.

you can be like Sam Fisher or go all Call of Duty on their ass. it's up to you. having choices is a bad thing? one of the guys who worked on Deus Ex and System Shock is making this so I wouldn't be so quick to judge the game.

Hey don't you badmouth text games!

Updated the OP with hardware specs, completely forgotten about this.

But I REALLY REALLY want a proper sneaker. Choices are good yeah, but there are sacrifices. Deus Ex will never be as good at sneaking as Thief.
