GTX 590 or GTX 670

Hi everyone!

I'm in a dilemma between an EVGA GTX 670 FTW and an EVGA GTX 590 Classified for $400, coming from a GTX 580. The research I've done seems to suggest that my 650W PSU will be adequate for the GTX 590.

The pros for the GTX 670 FTW seems to be that it consumes far less power, is quieter, has lower temperatures, and it should clock fairly high since it's on a 680 PCB. Cons are that it performs worse, and it's basically the retail price (without the 13% harmonized sales tax we Ontarionians have). The seller claims that he got this card from an RMA from a standard 670; would this still carry a 3 year warranty?

The pros for the GTX 590 Classified seems to be that it performs considerably better and is a "hot price" for a GTX 590. It also has a backplate (which I'm a sucker for ). Cons are the power consumption, heat, little but respectable overclocking potential, SLI issues, and dumps heat in the opposite direction of my case's airflow. The seller stated that this will come without warranty (since it was not registered), or the original packaging.

A little side note that my computer is located in my basement right now, so it's about a 18-20C all the time. Works wonders for air cooling.

If you were in my situation, which one would you pick? Thanks!

Well, instead of what I originally planned, I found a 7970 3GB DirectCu II on sale for $400. I figured that would be a better buy since it's much quieter, performs about the same, and clocks like a dream.... or so I thought. ASUS doesn't allow you to overvolt on a card that has beefed up VRMs and their custom cooling solution . Although, I'm hitting 60FPS with all my mods and ENB settings on Skyrim at 1125 on the core, so I'm content.

670 is better. Single GPU cards have less complications comparing to dual GPUs cards (e.g. game support and micro stuttering).

Besides, you can easily add another 670 in the future if you want more horse power.
590 is like a dead end for upgrade since I believe it would vanish from the market completely in a year or two.

BTW I came from 580 too. Now I'm using Galaxy GTX670GC and I'm pleased with it. It runs a little hot though (77c in full load, room temp around 30), but still no problem so far.

A 670 would be much better since for now as a single GPU card it is still more than sufficient and has amazing upgrade potential in the future with SLI rather than trying to mess with upgrading to Quad-SLI in the future to get more out of that 590.

Honestly I would wait for Kepler GK110 GPUs to release. I don't think its worth upgrading from a GTX580 at this point. Save your money for something else. But if you were to get anything id say a 670. The 590 sucks really bad.

What he said, for someone like me with a GTX460 it would make sense to upgrade but I'll say at this point I'm trying to wait it off and skip the new gen cards and wait for next ones, reason being
1. If Nvidia Geforce issue is low availability and high prices than what they should be.
2. If AMD Radeon Prices are still high due to lack of enough competing cards from Nvidia.

That being said i wouldn't want anything less than a HD7870 or GTX670, reason being i don't want anything less than 2GB Graphical Memory and i don't want anything less than 256bus Memory Interface, Plus for me If Nvidia i would want a GTX680 reason i dont want a chip with some of its units disabled or laser cut to damn down performance. That's why for AMD not less than HD7870 since its a full chip, or maybe ill have to get HD7970.


Anyway that's just me, the next time I'm upgrading a GPU will have to fall under the above statement as my guideline in the future, strictly for me i don't want crippled chips any more.

I'm surprised many people tell him to keep the 580, considering that I actually sold mine to get a 670.
Personally I think it's a decent upgrade; performance increase is clear and 670 is not that expensive.

I sold my 580 the first day I saw 670's test result and knew that this must be my next card. I got 350$ from my card since I sold it before major price drop of used 5xx series, therefore I pay roughly 120$ for a brand new 670.

I will definitely do the same again when GK110 arrives. Call me crazy.

According to the poll, I guess I'm going with the GTX 670 FTW.

The reason I'm upgrading is because both Battlefield 3 and Skyrim (the main games I play) are eating my 1.5GB vram. It turns off my Windows Aero sometimes while playing Battlefield 3 which is extremely irritating. I'm also only getting an average of 30-35 FPS on Skyrim with my ENB settings and mods.

I think the 670 FTW will be a substantial upgrade if I can get it ~1100MHz on the core, and I'll have a new card to play with . If I wait any longer, the release of the GTX 660 Ti may devalue my card further.

Yes, the 670 is a definite upgrade in every respect from the 580. I moved to a 7970 (comparative performer to a 670/680) and it is way faster than a 580, so 670 gets my vote too.
I would never ever touch a dual gpu that didn't come with a warranty or a means of obtaining one.

And ignore folk talking about the GK110, it's not a desktop consumer part. Even if it does appear on desktop's it will be in a different guise. And it will be very, very expensive.

The 670 FTW is a EVGA part. Warranty is doable. See link.

I have SLI GTX470, and have no framerate issues, however I only am gaming at 1920x1200.


Keep what you have and see what comes next from AMD/nVidia.

The bold text means the seller initially had a standard/stock/reference GTX670 and run into some problem with it, so he retarded it (RMA) and was given a replacement card which is the GTX670 FTW that he is selling.

Yes, Evga new warrenty transfers over now. and the GTX670 FTW card is the best 670 you can get in terms of being "reference" because it uses a 680 reference PCB rather then the shit mini 670 reference PCB.

Shame you've sold that 580 already, since the 680 doesn't have enough of a performance boost to justify the upgrade.

On top of this, you've got all the cons of the 590, compounded by it being a second hand unit with no warranty - I'd steer well clear.

Also, check out TPU's review. W1zzy really wasn't impressed, giving it only a 7.0 and I'd follow his advice.

I was just showing this to someone else, but if you're going to go for a 670 I would recommend Amazon.. they are selling em under $400 now which is pretty decent imo.

i will still say GTX670 should be fine for 1080p and 3D aswell there is always a 4gig version if u don't think 2gig is enough for 3d gaming aswell
