I used to have a 500w HiFi system then I blew out the sub(don't forget to turn the volume way down for a FPS shooter and have a boom go off...) so now I use a Logitech Z-2300 works just fine.

Both, if I loose either I am not happy. Headphones for voice and speakers for game sound..
I can't see how anyone would want voices conflicting with game sounds.
I like to hear that zombie creeping up on me, not some r-tard screaming.

Technically, I don't think the word "trend", which, in statistics, implies some predictable movement over time, can be used in relation to this data.

The poll also omitted headphones, probably leaving those with headphones to either pick their second favourite from the other options or not vote at all. This will indubitably have skewed results.

still using my z-5500, I wish they never disco'd these bad boys, loud and clear, i have to keep sub down at all times, but i let it loose every now and again. I only drop on my headphones for serious counter strike play only, and I have a good planetary mic for VOIP with my frands, so my desktop speakers dont ever bleed through (aww directional mics)

Headset FTW!

Speakers are nice...
and IF you can set up a room properly with surround the experience is impressive!

however, a good 5.1 headset is priceless.
Positional in-game audio is unbeatable.
you WILL hear sound that your speaker friends cannot catch.
This is a constant for me in COD and BF...
a dozen times per round telling friends "seriously? you didn't hear that???" LoL

Submersion is also 2x better because headphones do a FAR superior job blocking 'non-game sounds' (ie noise from the real world lol).

"so, if headsets are sooo great what the catch?"

to truly appreciate the headset advantage requires an X-fi sound card and a high quality 5.1 headset.

DO NOT USE USB HEADSETS!
they are simulated surround and compromise a lot of audio quality.

you needs a proper 3 connector headset that plugs into the three 5.1 ports on sounds card:
front, center, and rear. (some headset have a fourth connector for 'mic')

sometimes it is tricky fine tuning the 5.1 experience but it is WELL worth the effort

I wasn't aware 5.1 headsets could be high quality, due to the size of the drivers.

Got any examples?

Another external user here. Onkyo TX-SR606, Polk TSi100 fronts, Polk RM6750 for center, side, rear and sub. 7.1 channels of directional audio that completely shames any 5.1 headset I ever used in positional accuracy during gaming.

@pantherx12 SRSLY?!

Give some good speakers a chance, like Dynaudio DM 2/7. Take care of vibration absorbing on your desk, the position to the walls, etc.. The differences are huge.
HiFi all the way here and i am lucky to have the space to correctly place them.. And yes there is a lot who don't know or don't experiment enough or like i said just don't have the space for it then you have those who don't care\know about sound..

I have to use a HiFi as to me nothing else does the job as well which don't help as the same speakers used for my computer are used for watching movies.

The question was "what do you use", not "what do you prefer". Rather odd conclusion because of that. How many people live with their parents not being allowed to blast through the home cinema set?
