How to accelerate old laptop???
Hi.
I got myself an old laptop just for practical because I always use my home computer. Compaq Evo N610c Intel P4 2gigs 512k cache 1 gig memory Mobility Radeon 7500 80gigs hdd dvd-rom I installed Win XP pro sp3 on it and I want you to share some tricks with me to give it a free boost. I installed Google Chrome I suppose it could help but other than that? Also is it possible to take a 478 pentium4 and transplant it there even if its a pentium M 478 but with the same die size? Thx for helping me out

Just a joke

As for "accelerating" that thing. Probably the best thing you can do is use a lightweight Linux distribution on it, instead of windows (or maybe run windows 2000).

Add more memory if you can, that would help a lot. If not that, I second Windows 2000.

Xubuntu is good if you're not really into linux. It's lightweight enough to do what you will need it to do but if you wanted to save more memory, some other window managers (which aren't exactly cake to use,) that could save you memory. Personally when I use linux now I've been using the i3 window manager, you may like it too if you like tiling window managers that only use key-bindings.

how many ram slots there, if 2 you could buy another 1 gig or if it has 1 you could sell the old and buy 2 gig ram
more ram would help your system run better especially in heavy task

IDE SSD maybe? But memory + linux would do the trick I would think. Perhaps xubuntu.

Unfortunately, you're not gonna get better performance out of it when running Windows, as the OS is really quite slow. It's just that modern machines mask this through sheer brute force.
That Linux distro on the other hand may fly.

Replace the hard drive with a SSD if the hard drive in the laptop is SATA. Doing that would add way more performance than anything else you could do.

Android has been ported to x86 arhitecture by some people, as i remember trying out an ICS build in a virtual machine. Just search for it, it might be worth trying.

basically, the laptop is slow. you cant make it faster, so instead focus on making it do less.
if linux doesnt work out for you, run XP - but tweak it so nothing starts with windows, and dont install anything you dont need.

I'm sure some of us could help out with what services can be disabled and those that shouldn't be if the OP decides to take a stroll through services.msc.

stripping things out like that and not touching services, got me a lightweight OS that uses <100MB of ram at idle. still have that ISO around, but cant share it since it has my key preinstalled.

Xubuntu works fine in my virtual machine with 1gb, but I think that's dual core and pretty speedy. You might find (especially with 12.04) even xubuntu is a bit slowpoke. In that case there are plenty of alternatives to Ubuntu you might try - I can't suggest anything but Gentoo but that's complete overkill lol.
Try it first of course!

Xubuntu works fine! faster than xp of course. Now I just need to know how to remove older version when the synaptic package will put himself up to date.
Ill have to read about it carefully and translate since my O/S system is always in french

Its been said but Ill say it again. XP and SSD, 2.5- Inch, IDE, makes a big difference. But there not cheap
Other than that, there is little you can do to speed it up Last edited by Jetster; Jun 30, 2012 at 10:41 AM. |

an SSD would make it a lot snappier.
and add another gig of ram if you want to use Win7 Google chrome doesnt help speed it up. will slow it down

For the value of a SSD it would be more intelligent to invest in a newer laptop. For the memory it's maxed out. I am using Xubuntu and it's really faster than XP. Thx and It helped me out.
