HD7950 random black screen/vertical stripes.

Hello everyone,

My 2 week old XFX DD HD7950 that I've posted about before is beginning to cause me some major issues, it seems. I was getting a black screen freezing issue (usually only at night when the computer was unattended for some odd reason) that locks up my PC solid and I have to power cycle it to get it working again. Now, with Catalyst 12.6 (I have no idea if it is related to the issue), I am getting these crashes along with vertical stripe crashes now several times a day, usually when the computer is idle or doing F@H on the GPU. I can play TF2 or other games fine, but if I minimize TF2 sometimes I get one of these crashes after a few minutes, and it's entirely random.

Is my card bad, are the drivers bad, or is something else such as my PSU possibly the issue? This rig ran a Sapphire 6950 unlocked flawlessly for about 8 months. I've ran driver sweeper between driver installs, lowered the overclock significantly on the GPU to no avail. I just got the vertical stripes a few minutes ago while browsing these forums in Chrome with just this and Facebook open, but the driver recovered. Any ideas?

Another thing to note is that even at stock, I have to turn up the PowerTune slider to max or the card runs worse than a 6950. Could this be part of the problem as well?

Try the 12.7 beta's. I never used the 12.6 whql's but I used the beta's based off of them and I had the same issue.

I'm currently using 12.7 beta with my XFX 7950 BE 900/1350 factory clocked card, however it seems to sometimes get stuck on 501/1350 and nothing I do makes it go back to 150/300 in desktop or 900/1350, I believe they call it 2d mode? Has anyone experienced this with their 7950's, and if they have, any fixes? Just bought Resident Evil Operation Racoon City and it doesn't want to switch from 501/1350 no matter what..

I've been using 12.7 Betas since erocker told me to try them, and I've only had 3 blank screen crashes which happened with a game minimized to the desktop for a few minutes.

For anyone who has their card stuck at 501/1250, you MUST make sure no YouTube/Flash/Videos are running! Many people leave their browsers open all the time with YouTube tabs open and that locks the card at UVD clocks!

Appreciate the reply, seems like you're right, didn't know that , I had a youtube music video open in the background the whole gaming session, I'll report back later tonight to see if I stumble upon other instances.

No problem, 6xxx, 5xxx and probably even older ones have that "feature" where UVD clocks take precedence over 3D clocks. It's stupid.

I deactivated hardware acceleration in flash because it did that. But that was the other way, it pushed my laptops card out of battery saving mode, which I don't like.

Drivers off the CD give same result? I have had a couple issues with the last few driver sets, nothing serious/permanent so haven't complained so much. I did find that I can't get lazy at all with the new drivers and have to do the proper remove/restart/safe/sweep/install/game....

I tried 12.4/12.6beta/12.6/12.7beta and only the 12.7 drivers work the best for me (besides the compass part of the HUD in TESV:Skyrim being completely messed up). I never had this level of driver problems with my 6950 so I was rather shocked that these drivers pretty much made my hardware appear defective (vertical stripes of death usually only happen when the RAM is overclocked too far, and mine is overclocked to the rated speed of the GDDR5).

Even then, I'm still seeing occasional artifacts in what seems like almost every game, but they happen at any speed. They only appear for an instant, so I'm going to chalk it up to crappy drivers once again. Would've gone for a 670 if it wasn't so expensive, stripped down compute support, and only had 2GB/256bit GDDR5. Even NVIDIA has its problems, I suppose.

Just when I thought things were going good, I crawl into bed about 15 minutes ago after a couple hours of TF2. Then suddenly, this horrendous grinding noise suddenly starts and I opened up MSI Afterburner to find the video card tach dropped from 2000 to ~1400 RPM (fans are set to 47% for 40-80c temps, as I hate hearing fans ramp up/down constantly). Jostle the case around while lifting it out of my desk, noise disappears and audible clicking begins, and the noise comes back a minute later. The back fan on my card is now a rattling POS so now I have to RMA this f***ing card after 3 weeks!

I'm almost considering not buying another XFX card in the future. I guess the lifetime warranty is required for replacing these shitty coolers they put on and you can't take them off thanks to the warranty stickers. Unbelievable.

Same issue (lock up and vertical stripes) Visiontek 7950

I'm having the same exact issue on my visiontek 7950 (non-overclocked).

Before this I had the visiontek 6950 and never had problems.

Anyhow...

Quick note: I've been a computer nerd since the commodore/amiga era, and tried everything suggested above... I even updated the Bios to latest version of all my pc components (motherboard, usb3, sata, ssd etc)... Have the latest drivers for everything... Even did clean install with Windows 8... The only thing I haven't updated the bios to is the video card...

EVGA x58 SLI3
Intel i7 920 2.66GHz @ 3.4GHz (even locked up at non-overclocked)
12GB RAM

Windows 7 x64 and Windows 8 x64 Release Preview

Tried 12.6WHQL, 12.7 beta (on both windows 7 and 8)... and Windows 8 release preview beta drivers...

The thing I noticed is that photoshop cs6 flickers and crashes the PC (vertical lines) when GPU hardware accelleration is turned on...

Funny though, when I play video games it's rock solid... mainly happens when using photoshop CS6 (latest version)... but just now it happened again, shortly after the first crash, but NOT using photoshop--it froze when using GPUz "submit [bios] to online database"...

I'm thinking this has to be bad GPU hardware or bios.

Ok...

Removed the cooler, and seen the thermal compound is all wrong... Huge bubble in the middle...

I cleaned it up and put some arcticsilver ceramique on it (rice size/dot method)...

Then I flashed with Asus 7970 regular BIOS http://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/1...72.111220.html

So far so good... Temp is only about 5 Celsius higher, than prior to properly putting on thermal paste and before the higher clock/memory.

How did you flash a 7950 with a 7970 BIOS? Did it unlock any stream processors?

Other than that, 12.7 beta was the "most stable" driver if I could even call it that. My card is on its way to XFX though thanks to one of the fans failing horribly.
