problem with a laptop!

Hi, i have a HP läptop on my hands that has a weirs problem. I turn it on, and the laptop screen is full of vertical lines(doesn't work). When I connect an external monitor to the laptop I see Post screen, but for weird reasons I see it on the laptop screen aswell. Does anyone know why laptops screen works only when external monitor is attaced?

So the laptop monitor works correctly when you have an external display attached, but not without?

Vertical lines sounds like a GPU issue but .. Yeah it's weird. Which model is it?

Already checked. Cables are in place. vga output and internal display cable are in the same area of the motherboard. Could it be a faulty resistor etc. causing the problem?

I think it maybe related to the same issue that the DV9 series had... checkout this vid here

You could try and replace the display cable for nine bucks example but you'll need to verify your part number since there is one for WXGA and WSXGA.
The Display invertor is also less than 10 bucks example

The motherboard runs from 80 to 99 dollars depending on the model...

I actually baked my 8800gtx in the oven, and it still works (fan 100% while gaming). Puting the mb in the oven is my last option. Since video is fine with external monitor, i guess gpu is fine. But the laptop screen also works while external screen is connected. That's weird and I doubt that it's gpu or even lcd cabel. Should mention, that both screens work when external monitor is connected before powering up. When I connect the external monitor to a powered on laptop, then only external screen has picture - laptop screen full of vertical lines.

have you tried lowering the resolution/refresh of the monitor?

it could be that the monitor is running settings it cant handle, and its automatically changing them to other settings when the external is connected.

you could test this by seeing if the laptops screen works in the BIOS, or windows safe mode

My external screens default resolution is 1680x1050, so i think it is harder to handel than laptops default resolution.

not the point. if the laptop is trying to use the wrong one for the internal screen, this would explain some of the issues.

Thank you all for your help, but none of us guessed what the problem was. You want to know what it was. Well, laptops get hot right. And the display cable was exactly where hot air comes out. It turns out that the air was so hot that it heatead up metal frame that melted the cable. case closed
