8600GT compare

I have 2 X 8600GT pci-e card one of 256megs and 512 megs. The thing im wondering is why the 512megs give me a 5.7 score in Win 7 and the 256megs gives me a 5.8 in the same computer.
Thank you

Although WEI is not important maybe the 256MB is clocked higher.

Windows Experience Index. That's what gave you the score, right? For OC try MSI Afterburner, software, I think it supports your card.

Many video cards that have more RAM than is typically standard for that GPU resort to using slower RAM.

I had an 8600 GTS years ago and unless you have an aftermarket cooler on it i wouldn't overclock it unless where talking only a few Mhz(without much to any of a voltage increase). The coolers were so small and shitty on those lines of cards. Even the fan on the Asus cards will not net you a significant overclock.

Also i would pay much attention to the WEI, as it's not really a good way to gauge performance differences.

Ya that's the cooler i'm talking about on the ASUS cards, i don't believe they will net you enough of a speed increase to have you gain much to any performance.

Remember to check your temps.

To check stability and temps run a game or GPU stress test(you can use MSI Afterburner to check temps while in game). Don't just overclock and check if your WEI score changes, as again, that's meaning less to whether or not the card can actually function at the speeds you're increasing it to.

I'm going to make research over the net for what people did with these cards and then safely overclock it.

People are crossfiring 2 cards on 1 screen with an Y adapter but could it be done on a flat TV at 720P or 1080P through the DVI plugs on cards with adapters to HDMI ? Will it crossfire on HDMI ?

NVidia uses SLI not crossfire. You need a SLI bridge and a SLI certified motherboard. You connect just one card to your monitor (or TV as a monitor)

Then no go for SLI. You need two to run at least at x8

I'm not a big gamer but if I go on a budget do you think I could run BF3 usingthese 2 cards overclocked if I find a real cheap used micro atx mobo than can handle it?

The 512Mb might have enough video memory to run it. You should be able to overclock it fairly well, even without any voltage mods. I had an XFX 8600 GTS 512Mb that would run 950Mhz on the core and 1950Mhz on the shader domain. If you don't have PCI-E power coming into the card, a lot of GTs have a spot where you can solder a PCI-E power connector to the card which substantially improves the ability to overclock it.

If he SLI's them he will end up with 256Mb(the other card) It would be a bit of a stretch I think. Also he would be running DX10 which might hinder performance too.

Edit: I think he would have to consider a slightly more powerful PSU to do SLI as well.

Maybe with everything on low with a few effects turned on like AA(at a low sampling), motion blur etc. Those cards are just far to old to run the majority of today's games on decent settings. BF3 is a pretty big resource hog so i bet those cards will struggle with such low video memory and such an old architecture.

If you have then overclocked and you have two 512MB cards then you might be able to move up to medium with effects turned off.

Short answer. No. If your PC is that in the specs and you're on a budget I'd recommend this card, it will help you play BF3 on medium/high with good framerates and it's $110 after rebate:

EVGA 01G-P3-1464-KR GeForce GTX 560 SE (Fermi) 1GB...

8600 GT really isnt the card to have. It was one of the first generation of 2006 DX10 cards which were slower than the predecessor DX 9.0 generation cards. You might get away with BF2 because its a 7 year old game.

To play BF3 you don't need to spend alot. GTX 550, GTX 460, 6790, 7770..all cheap cards.
