Google 1Gbps fiber (Kansas)

So apparently google is launching their own fiber service for people in america (kansas)
the packages look awesome imo. 70 US for 1gbit? NO data cap and also you get a free
1 TB google drive storage.. thats one heck of a pretty sweet deal . And also the 1gbit is for upstream and downstream. More here

One can only hope they expend to different countries/cities.

There was a competition a long time ago and that Kansas town won (if memory serves, they renamed the town to Google for a while or something like that). They're doing a trial run there and everything goes well, they will introduce the service to other towns.

I really hope it takes off. The USA is way behind in terms of internet bandwidth/satisfaction.

Yeah, 5 mbps/1 mbps is faster than I get for about $40 a month--they get it free.

Why do I get the feeling ISPs are scamming everyone in the USA?

I live in Kansas City and been waiting for this awhile now. They started running the main fiber lines about a year ago and still gunna be another year til the service goes live.

Gigabit internet speeds just sound so unreal.

The real issue is bandwidth throttling across backbone and competing carriers. The tubes being slow is due to these issues, not the 10+ MBps available to many.

yea that and consider all of the old routing hardware still used today which creates much of the lag people get when playing online games. a 1 Gb connection may not improve anyones ping rate if all other ISPs are using crap hardware still. if anything, this move by google will force competing ISPs to up their game.

I do believe the US backbone is probably the fastest in the world. How else could Google, Microsoft, IBM, Valve, YouTube, etc. run these huge web operations? The problem is all the ISPs are reserving their bandwidth for companies that pay $1000+ a month and only give a trickle to home users. The bandwidth is available in a lot of cases, they just don't want to sell it at the rate(s) Google and co-op ISPs are doing it for.

good point. considering the amount of pipe and the technology in the U.S., we definitely have the best and fastest equipment next to perhaps South Korea. and just like you said, you can't really compare a massive country like the US to South Korea or the other tiny advanced countries in Europe since costs are much lower there because of geography and they never had to pay the massive upfront investment in research that the US years ago.

Lulz.

Netflix comcast
Comcast youtube
time warner youtube

Many others suffer the same issue, carriers throttle end users on high bandwidth sites during peak hours, many times falling short of the 70% they are supposed to provide.

The bandwidth is there, the issue is the a holes at cable companies want to make you watch TV instead of internets.

A local ISP has been very busy where I live. They have been building a fiber infrastructure covering the entire county and neighboring counties. Right now they offer a TV service and 10/10 to 100/100 connections but when they build is complete I am sure that the speeds will increase.
