Projector problem

Hello, I've been asked to try and fix a projector with these white specs all over the screen. I don't believe it's dust otherwise it would've cast a shadow, not a white color (am I correct?).

The screen is also blurred to a large degree.

Is it broken? Or is it fixable?

Since you were asked to "try" to fix it, I would go for it.
Open it up and clean everything you can get to.
The focus problem is of more concern as that could be lense positioning (it moved a little from getting handled, etc.).
That may be adjustable too, but may not be easy to get back into spec.

I would google it to death to see what others have done in similar situations.

Yea I agree with Kreij, google the crap out of it to see what others have done, but I think dirty mirror is a definite possiblity. Get cleaning! =)

Just take your time and be careful.
If you can't seem to get somewhere or get something apart without using a hammer, then stop.
I've ripped projectors apart and replace board components and such. They are not that fragile or they would not be able to take the abuse of being ported around.

If you really feel uncomfortable with doing it, then by all means have it looked at by someone else.
Unfortunately, that is usually really expensive and many times you can replace the projector for less.

Just my 2 cents.

Also note that the focus is usually handled by two adjustments, at least the newer ones do. The lense turning and also usually a slide adjuster right behind the lense.
