AGP 1GIG video card
I'm looking to buy a video card for my old computer, I want it to have more graphical power replacing my 9800xt 256mb.
I think a 1gig will be enough, I don't have the money to buy a new pc with pci-e yet so I'm looking for a nice deal I can only spend up to 35$, please give me some advices as what to buy. |

Sounds like you're more looking for advice on what card to buy, rather than looking to buy a card from one of us. This would belong in the Graphics Cards section. The B/S/T forum is for wheeling and dealing between TPU members. Maybe someone could make you an offer, though.

As was stated this maybe better off in the Graphics card section. Also maybe fill out the system specs section under user cp that way we know which way to point you. Not every Agp card will work with every Agp system.

Honestly if you plan on any newer style games you are almost SOL with an AGP card. I would start saving up for atleast a AMD AM2+/AM3 quad combo or hell even a dual core combo with PCIex.
Just my advice.

Your system specs would be handy right now. Someone may have the perfect card for you but won't know until you post up.

And your system specs would be nice. You could be doing worse by upgrading then you think. You may be at the best suited card for your system.

Whats your processor speed and how much memory are you running? I will guess 2 gb or less. Under win xp with that little of memory you will want no more then a 512 mb card. As win xp uses dx9 it shadows the video memory to system memory. Which means if it is a 1gb card dx9 will suck up 1gb of system memory to shadow video memory. You are left with 1gb to run the os and whatever game your running. Your system will crawl. The less system memory the less video memory you want under win xp. And with the athlon xp you are pretty much running the best card out there for it. It's hard to beat a 9800XT. Yes there are faster cards but will you notice it? Probably not.

My advice: Get away from AGP if you can. I have a few newer ASRock AGP boards (LGA 775 and AM2+) and have learned that AGP is only designed for single core systems. All my multicore AGP systems, even with proper GART drivers are terribly stuttery with normal desktop/web usage. A dual core Intel E6600 3.06GHz CPU bottlenecked my ATI Radeon HD 3850 512MB AGP. The optimal card for that system was an NVIDIA 7800GS until the card died.
Your Athlon XP is much too slow for anything faster. I'd stick with the 9800 until it breaks.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NForce3...ncompatibility
That issue above affects NForce 2 Users aswell, its a marketing ploy. Applies to Windows 7 aswell as there is no optimized driver for NF2 or NF3 GART Id Recommend an Upgrade to an Athlon II X4 or Core i5, keep the old machine as a spare

Yeah, I'm pretty sure. An X1950 Pro would even be bottlenecked by an Athlon XP.
For $150 you can get a dual core AMD A4 APU with DX11 graphics, a FM1 motherboard and 4GB DDR3 and blow your current system out of the water.

AMD did an 4650 AGP card, this afaik was the last one they did and should give you a hell of a boost over an 9800xt and give you sufficient graphics on your 15" monitor

but that one is ddr2 with a small fan and I seem ddr3 with bigger fans for agp. is that one of the best tou? I can get 2.5gb of system ram so it doens't crawl my system when it shadows video memory.

You can't do 2.5 gb of memory and stay with dual channel. 2gb is max for that board and dual channel mode. That 4650 would be a total waste imo. Your processor just wouldn't be able to halfway keep up. Your are probably at the best card for your system. Your best bet is to save your pennies and start buy piece buy piece and new system. Hell you can build something that would be hundreds of times faster then what you have for less the $200 used. Hell I had a dual core combo complete for sale on here once for $155 and that included proc, mobo, and memory and video card. Deals pop up all the time, you just need to keep an eye out for them. I just wouldn't put the money into another video card for your system and you end up worse then you are.

Also you sill still have use of your 2GB ram as a 32bit os can only address upto 4gb if you have 1gb card and 2gb ram it's a total of 3gb

3850 AGP is the best card. I needed to use it on my ASRock AM2NF3-VSTA with a Phenom II X4 955BE to even get the best performance out of that card, and was stuck with Windows XP 32bit as the only OS I could get the proper AGP performance from.
In my opinion, getting one would be about as useful as running an HD 7970 on a Pentium 4. Don't waste your money on a 10 year old computer if that's all you have.

In all honesty id keep the existing machine as is. Then go Skt Am3+ or Skt Fm2 with a Radeon HD 7770 8 GB 1866 MHz Ram Windows 7 Pro SSD.
