molex to PCI-E connector for Radeon 7950
Hello,
I have just ordered a 7950 to upgrade from my old GTX275 card. Before installing i need some advice. First of all, my PSU is an Antec Neo-He 550. For now, i have only - 1 x PSU connector to PCI-e cable - 1 x PSU connector to 3 x Molex - 1 x PSU connector to SATA drive connector. + of course the standard not modular motherboard connector. My computer is quite old and i'm not the one who build it so atm, the cable provide power as follow : - (1 x PSU connector to SATA drive connector) for my SATA hardrive 5400 rpm - (1 x PSU connector to SATA drive connector) for the 1st PCI-e port of my GTX 275 - (1 x PSU connector to 3 x Molex) : 1st molex is plugged with a 1 x molex to 1 x PCI-e for the second port of my GTX275, 2nd molex to my DVD burner and 3d molex for 2 case fans. I use my computer like this for 3 years without any problems, but after reading and earning knowledges about PC, i know that the 1 x molex to 1 x PCI-e connector is not a proper way to provide a clean energy to the GPU. Although, i read any things about a molex and i have seen that a single molex has a +12V cable, a +5V cable and 2 grounds cable, each with a maximum of 11A/pin. It means that the single yellow pin of a molex can provide 132W. Here is my question, as the needed power for a MSI HD 7950 TF3 is 3*75W (PCI-e mobo slot + 2xPCI-e), is my single (1 x PSU connector to 3 x Molex) enough to provide power to 2 case fans (120mm + 80mm), 1 DVD burner and 1 molex to 1x PCI-e slot for my Radeon 7950 without burning ? Should i wait to receive an extra (1 x PSU connector to 1 x PCI-e) before using my new GPU ? Thanks. |

I would buy a new psu with the proper connections. molex to pci-e are only meant for temporary use

I have a Neo-He 550w as well, and mine has 2 pci-e connectors... did you lose some of your cables or something?

Ye, that's why i have to use this "connecting solution" atm. I have contacted Antec, they can send me extra cables. But just for information, it would be good to know if the way my wire are connected is good enough or not because we can read plenty of different things everywhere on internet...

Good enough, yes, but not ideal.

maybe you should consider underclocking it for a while, till you've upgraded/got the proper cables in place, chances are your system will bottleneck the gfx card anyways, and an underclocked 9750 will still blow away pretty much anything you throw at it.
I dont know how it's done with an ati card, i do know it can pretty easily be done with an Nvidia one anyways. |
